people dont spend that much money in cafes. usually they sit there all day with the same cappuccino all day. i think that the road toll is way too exepensive. it should be atleast cheaper for croatian citizens. i recently took the new road from zg to split. . its nice but the price is too high ,. and because you are driving fast , you waste 3 times as much fuel. i think that the freeway is going to improve the penetration of auto pollution into the beautiful croatian counbtry side and far untouched coastal regions. im definiotely going to stick to the old route through knin . the new freeway is empty but the old route is packed with traffic . i wonder why ? you dont need to be a doctor or professor hahha to figure that out. 2 feelings I have...... (1) Lower the price for us croatians, we would in turn use the hiway more and that would mean more revenue for the gov. like valiant said. (2) In the future when more croatian are making more money raise the tolls higher and equally for tourist and croatian. Every couple of years increase tolls that way it will keep the ball rolling for new freeways and maintence of the roads.

Does the goverment own the highway, or a private company?
Not that it matters, tolls only go up, never down.
How much is the toll, as a matter of interest?

From Zagreb to the closest junction to Osijek it is more than €25 for the toll there and back.
If you do that trip three- four times a week like I was at one point, the price some because stupid.

Toll, I don't now where your figures are from but they are wrong.
I have driven to Osijek using the highway many times, and it is about 80kunas each way. 160 kunas return or €25. In other words, a complete rip off.

Toll, Sorry but your numbers can't be right! We've taken the highway from Split-Sibenik, then again where it picks up north to outside of Rijeka. The tolls were much higher than that, but I can't recall at the moment the exact price. I remember we talked about how high the tolls were, but we decided to keep using the highway, because it was way better than taking those terrible tiny winding mountain pass roads, or the coastal road which takes twice as long.
EMIZ, I think your numbers are more on the mark, although I've never taken the highway up the Zagreb way myself.
