That’s right…only few more months and new tourist season will start in Croatia. After last years very successful price increases of ~15% we managed to have most profitable tourist season ever. And in same time keep same number of visitors. It’s obvious that due to the price increases some of the tourists had to go elsewhere, but the freed resources fortunately created more options for wealthier tourists to come and visit Croatia. To be more specific, German tourists were biggest contributors to the last years very successful season. It’s obvious that mere 15% price increase did not bother wealthy BMW and Mercedes driving Germans. And in addition, newly built Croatian highways brought wealthy Germans even closer to the Croatian coast. For example, Dalmatia is now only few hours of comfy BMW highway cruising away from Munchen. What do you think, how much will Croatia increase prices this year to keep wealthy BMW and Mercedes driving Germans in, while keeping various underemployed welfare types from the west out? I suspect that prices will increase at least10% this year as well.

I think this is a poor attempt at winding up certain nations.
5 out of 10, must do better.
It is clear that anybody that drives here will not contribute as much in real terms, as people who do not drive. People who drive bring their own food, their own deck chairs, everything they can.
Germans are good tourists, but Croatia should cast its net wider and accept and aim for tourists from everywhere.
When on the coast, I have heard Croats scoffing at Czechs, because they don’t spend enough money, for gods sake, they spend what they can.
Accept and hope for tourists from everywhere, the more the better.

as if Austrians and Slovinians do not scoff Croats going to Ski there. Now you have to pay fine if you take Sarma or any kond of home prepared food accross the border. Most of budget skiiers would fill the car with such food when going to Ski.
EMIZ you as usual see one side of the medal.

good post this one, emiz has a good point, get as many tourists as possible to come wether they are top of the range or lower down, the more the better for croatia, but they need to be careful to not put the prices up too much. we all agree Croatia is beautifull, but they have to look at the bigger picture that they are in competition with, spain, cyprus, portugal and the rest. even the bucket & spade brigade coming from northern europe will bring money to croatia. the first thing they have to do is to get these stupid air fares down, if you have the option of spending £79 to spain and £279 to split, its obvious where you go come on people, lets have some more on this subject, instead of throwing abuse, as some of the other threads are just slanging matches

OK, I know someone will call me a snob, or worse, for what I am about to write but I feel strongly enough not to care - 'sticks and stones....etc'! I don't want the bucket and spade brigade to come to Croatia - 21 years ago I 'found' Rabac and said 'never again' to Spain or Majorca, simply because of the peace and lack of industrial tourism. I want my 'second home' to prosper, but I'm fussy how it's done!!

Hey Elaine You are a snob, did god set you apart from the rest of ordinary working people, you are probably one of these people that walk round with your nose in the air, and start shouting at local people to talk english when its you that should be speaking the local language, unfortunately croatia needs you but it also needs the so called bucket and spade brigade. croatia needs the money that everybody will bring in, if its done correctly they can have the mass tourism without having the magalufs of spain, dont be so bloody selfish

Elaine..you are not a snob you are selfish.
Surely the idea is to help Croatia, not help you.
Trust me..you visiting here a few times a year really wont have a big impact on the fortunes of Croatia’s struggling economy. One of my family members was once the tourism minister for Croatian, and it his attitudes like yours he hates the most.
Like everything else it is a numbers game, Croatia needs to offer something; my personal hope would be the Algarve route, lots of golf courses, reasonable but not excessive prices but still plenty to offer.
Not every coastline becomes a new Spain, even Spain has some of the most beautiful untouched coastline in Europe.
The one thing I do find strange about your attitude is the idea that as you have been coming here a long time, you have more right than any other foreigner to enjoy Croatia, you are and will always be an outsider, by your reckoning you and all other foreigners shouldn't really be there at all because it is first come first served and therefore only Croatians should enjoy the coast.
Or is it more just a case of....I'm alright jack.
A slong as you avoid the lager louts, brits are gat tourists who spend more money on holiday than any other nation in Europe, but brits usually want something to do, Croatia’s tourism should be its shining light, its tool of recognition, but invest attract the people..Dubrovnik is really beautiful and a must see…but after a few weeks it just becomes a boring bunch of rocks…
(Adopts Winston churchill voice) Hdz the time is right and the time is now, open the airways, invest spend the money for they will come..they will spend..and Croatia will become a happening country with diversity and open minds with a flourishing economy...
As for the bucket and Spain brigade,…I think they need sand for their castles ;D

What the hell is the bucket and spade brigage?
I have now seen this term 2 times, I think I know what it means but I do not want to assume what it means.
So, can someone explain!

I agree Croatia needs tourism and I don't mind if people come with their own food because no matter if they bring food with them. They still have to buy something in Croatia, Gas, Drinks, Tolls, Whatever they are still spending money in CRO, even if it is not alot.
I also think we have a responsibility to build a good infrastructure(Roads, as well as housing). That way croatians living in Croatia are not hating tourists and tourism. If roads are well connected and you have plenty of them to keep traffic minimal. If there are plenty of nice hotels, B & B's without over doing it (NO CONCRETE JUNGLES HERE PLEASE) then Croatians will look forward to hosting tourists and tourism.
We can make money in Tourism without going the usual route like spain, majorca, parts of Italy ect.
That can be our catch. Croatia is not your usual tourist spot. Or You wont see the usual tourism in Croatia... I think we should follow others(countries) who have succeeded in Tourism without selling out there souls for the $. ;D

LoveU2, I like your suggestions that Croatia be more low key as a tourist destination. But something you said struck me as odd: "no more concrete jungles here". It's strange, I realized yes, as far as I can see, Croatian beaches are literally concrete. People lay on the concrete. I've never seen that before in all my years of travelling the globe (except in Slovenia, where they have the same concrete problem).
I hope Croatia stops concreting over everything, because it does not make for an enjoyable beach vacation. Between that and the rocks, the beaches here are pretty hard on the bottom, and I always long for the soft white sand beaches of Asia. Croatia needs to do something here. I like EMIZs idea about the golf courses too, bring in the richer people.
It sounds like the price increases may keep out the bucket and spade brigade, but right now it is EXACTLY those people that keep Croatian tourism going. Since there is nothing exciting here (clubs, etc) the young and energetic don't come. Since there is nothing to spend your money on (casinos, golf, luxury spas) the rich type don't come. Right now, the do-it-yourself families and ordinary folks are all that are making it here.
