When I told friends and family (from Canada, Korea, UK, Thailand, Australia, basically my friends from all kinds of countries) I was moving to Croatia, most people were horrified, thinking that I was in danger of stepping onto a landmine, and that it was a land of war mongers and fascists. So LoveU2, no you are wrong, "most people" all over the world do not think of Croatia as a land of "kind" people.
Personally I don't care whether or not Croatia enters the EU, but I would certainly hope that any country that did would be willing to bring criminals to justice. And they shouldn't do it to please Western Europe, they should do it to honour and vindicate the people who were victims of the war criminals, and to heal their country so they can move on.
And by the way, the reason that most criticism of Croatia comes from "the English" is that they are by far the majority of expats here. If this country were full of Brazilian expats, the Croats would charge that people from Brazil were hateful for complaining about their country. It's only common sense, people, think about it.

Where do you live....HMMMM I bet England, with a few trips a year to croatia to a summer home you scammed off some old timers. ;D So now you think your Hrvatska and you can tell everyone what they should think about Croatia. Do you work in Croatia. I bet you only have residency there so you can get your retirement-tax free & other income-tax free! I bet your pound goes along way in Croatia compared to England! Why do you come to Croatia....really...do tell? We know it's not for the golf! Maybe you want EU, to make it easier for you to buy more houses from unfortunate Croatians Also if you are so concerned about Croatia get your citzenship and vote! But by all means tell us your thoughts about why you are in Croatia? We are all eager to hear! LoveU2 OK, let's take this one by one, answering the questions, not raving like a lunatic foaming at the mouth. Q1. Where do you live....HMMMM I bet England, with a few trips a year to croatia to a summer home you scammed off some old timers. ;D A1. Wrong Q2. So now you think your Hrvatska and you can tell everyone what they should think about Croatia. Do you work in Croatia. I bet you only have residency there so you can get your retirement-tax free & other income-tax free! I bet your pound goes along way in Croatia compared to England! Why do you come to Croatia....really...do tell? We know it's not for the golf! A2. Wrong . No, I'm Irish, and I'm investing in Croatian property, bought off a developer, because I happen tho think it is a better investment than leaving my bloody hard earned money sitting in a bank account, where they will only invest my money elsewhere anyway. Golf ..... Great if it happens, no big deal if it doesn't. Infrastructure and Economy more important. EU ...... I've seen from experience the benefits it brings to a country that was bankrupt in 1983-1985. Q.3 Maybe you want EU, to make it easier for you to buy more houses from unfortunate Croatians A.3 Wrong ! Won't make any difference to buying of more property to me, although it would help the economy and therefore any property investment thereafter. For someone has made a career from, and indeed been able to take early retirement at 36 years of age because of the property (real estate) business, you have a very parochial view of the property market. There are sellers and there are buyers. The sellers are trying to attain the best price they can, normally the highest bidder wins, regardless of who they are or where they come from. The buyer is trying to invest their money in a property that will appreciate in value over time. Those principles are the same in any language, and in any country, and don't tell me that you haven't appied the same logic when you buy a property. I hope that answers your questions in a direct and objective manner.

Not totally correct on your theory of R.E. There are laws so it is not just anything goes, highest bidder takes all.
Some investments are blocked by countries to protect themselves. Do you think that say, I don't know maybe India.... they can go into Dublin and buy up over a certain percentage of property and the government will allow it.... say India buys up 75% of Dublin, is the government just going to sit back and say go ahead India take us all.... No, Countries have limits on the amount of Immigrants that they will allow in the country, how much property can be invested to foreign countries..... It is not just sell to the highest bidders.
Also in many countries there is limits for housing...So many homes have to be for low income familys. These homes have to be sold to family's that qualify for these homes and No the highest bidder just can't have what he wants. So, yes there are rules to Real Estate and right now Croatia has NONE.
Another thing say Bill Gates goes to Croatia, he decides he wants to buy all of Croatia, he quite possibly could do it....hahaha Do you think than that your theory about R.E and the highest bidder really matter now? It is not always about the highest bidder, it is about what is also good for the community. Not just who has the most money! That is a very simplistic way of looking at R.E. But R.E and life are not that simple nor in Croatia does anything ever go thru simply and easily.
It is not about the highest bidder, countries have limits on the amount of Immigrants that they will allow in and they also have limits on how much property can be invested to foreign countries..... It is not just sell to the highest bidders.

So yes there are rules to Real Estate and it is not always the highest bidder. Right now Croatia is like the wild west alot of things are not being properly done but I hope that will change....I hope Croatia also limits foreign ownership, just like other industrialized Countries.

u2 I have come to the conclusion that your problems with foreigners in Croatia is that it hampers your personal agenda.
You want to move there, and buy a business with your yanky dollars, and exploit the market place due to the education you received in USA, but you have realised that all these d**n foreigners are spoiling your plans.

Getting back to the thread, I don't see how the UK is preventing accession talks any more than any other EU state. I know Blair is a pro-expansionist (at least he says he is) but it's J-P Juncker, the commissioner from Luxembourg and Rehn who has been leading on this. If I sense any real opposition, it comes from Slovenia. That's the whisper from Medjimurski ljudi but this may result from eternal arguments at border crossings. In the end, I don't suppose the UK government care that much. The earlier posts have captured and eloquently expressed what I see as the bland truth of it.
PS: My Swedish friends also think I live amid mines and burnt out villages. Apart from the coastal tourism, it's the only international press that HR ever gets. The UK Times carried a big 2-page story about corrution from the sale of land owned by "exiled" Serbs. It doesn't help and I share the frustration of Croats that such coverage is the only impression to reach the "international community".
