near native fluency
my dad did not let us speak english in the house growing up
when my brother and i were in Dubrovnik during summer of 2003 no one knew where we were from. They knew we weren't natives(probably due to our clothes and accents) but they didnt know if we were from Australia or the US. in 2004 our parents came along with their 80's sweatsuits so we kind of stood out a bit more like tourists. I didnt speak english at all while i was there if thats any indication.

whats wrong with your president??? dont like mesic eh??
the E.U. will bring its own set of problems but at least they will invest in your country...either way...there will be poor people and rich people and corrupt ones. But the E.U. will bring in subsidies and "real" companies. Its not croatia's fault that they were stuck in YUGO for so long. But the end result is that theres no way any croatian companies will survive competing with "western" companies that have competed in democratic and capitalistic environments. Croats don't like that but they will learn and then form competitive companies. In the US...its mostly multi-national corporations...which i am against....but have no control over. It does create jobs though...I dunno...I hope they get in in 2007. I would move there and work or start my own company. Its stupid all that about Gotovina and Brussels not allowing CRO into the EU because he is missing. Look the EU sucks too...its just alot better than not being in it. Without it they will screw you even harder by charging huge tarrifs on exports and imports...effectively strangling your country. It will take time...many years...decades till things get REALLY GOOD...the U.S. was NOTHING until WWII. War is money. Now we are the richest country. Not that i care either way.
But the main thing people ask me about CRO is "is it safe there?" and i'm like "yeah, dude, its way safer than living in the US"
We got treated very nicely for the most part. Got some attitude in Dubrovnik last May...season hadn't started...there weren't too many people around... I dunno though...there's not a very nice persons and good people everywhere..but I spoke Croatian the whole time...and it wasn't like i sounded like a retard or a monkey either...all slow or anything.... i mess up a few words here and there... and my vocabulary can always improve...i understand 98% of any conversation.

oh and i love your cops and customs agents. they were so cool to us.
these two cops were f**king with my brother and his friend and these two swedish girls who were looking over gate to find their house(like 3 in the morning drunk) and these two cops see us down this alley in dubrovnik. They were all serious at first..."what are you doing...your trying to break in....and she..she's the ringleader"....all in croatian of course....after he called the swedish girl the ringleader...i just started laughing and they did too....they were just acting all tough...were totally cool once i told them in croatian we were just helping these drunk girls find the house they rented... it was funny... then the customs agent really early in the morning before i had coffee asked my brother and i what we had in our bags... a rocket launcher??? and i was like "oh no no no" "nemozemo niti se saliti od tome" and he laughed and said "znam, zato sam to rekao" so it was really cool and funny. THen a bartender asked me if my mom played basketball after i told him her prezime was cosic..wahahahahahahahaha. ;D

luda,
I just don't want croatian's to be poor thats all. I may be wrong about the EU thing. How old are you luda??? I'm 29 but I'm at University so I only know a bit about what 20 somethings are talking about. What do you mean Croatian girls are trying to be a joke? I don't understand what you mean. you can tell me in Croatian in parantheses if you want(hehehe). I found the Croatian girls to be quite cool(as in hard to get to know). Do they like Americans? What about Croatian Americans? When i went to old yugo in the 80's as a boy everyone loved us because we were from America. Now its different but ....i figured a Croatian girl wouldn't mind meeting an American...especially one who speaks and parents are Croatian. I guess the dating scene is different there. What's the best angle to meet Croatian girls next time i go? What do they like, dislike? Should i just go up to strangers in the street and say hi? Explain how your dating system works. In the US its crazy. Traditionally you meet people through school, work, friends. Now, alot of people meet in bars and go home with each other. Not my style...But thats the crazy youth of today. Adijo, John

Glad you got the joke in it John, next time you're over take a wander to Sarajevo, my God the level of beauty there is unbelieveable! I think maybe it's my 2 years in the Middle east, but that type of look and beauty is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. Sure Croatian girls are pretty, but like your mother always told you, if you want to know what you'll be stuck with in 20 years, take a look at her mother, hence the shaving joke ;D

Ja Sam and Croatian/American are the same guy...me...posted under diff name on other post. Anyways...LUDA...my mom doesn't care for the EU too and she knows whats going on more than i do(or at least the propoganda that is being fed from Croatian News) Maybe Croatia should just stay a small country. I'm sure the rest of us are ... one way or the other for being a part of the monstrosity of capitalism. Maybe I'll get out in time!!!!
