I'm still learning this language, so I like to read these translations and try to figure them out for myself. Does it actually say that he was 'thinking of sending them with the guests' ? If so, I think I got it right.

Great. I'm getting there slowly. I'd probably do a lot better if I took lessons, but I'd rather learn it by living it. I'm not doing too badly for a poorly educated beggar though. If only people here would talk to me in croatian, everyone seems more keen on practising their english(including my wife) than helping me practise Croatian. Still, I get by.

Yes, your translation is literal, but the meaning is the same. Well done Gavin. For the sake of practising Croatian, try translating this: "Ne zelim se hvaliti, ali svi mi kazu da sam najbolji ulicni izvodjac u Hrvatskoj".

I don't like to brag, but everyone tells me that I'm the best performer in Croatia. I'll admit to having to ask my wife what hvaliti meant(never come across it before), but the rest of the words I'm quite familiar with. I can understand a lot more than I can speak. I think the declination holds me back from trying most of the time.

I wouldn't worry too much about declination, Gavin. The only way to learn is by practising. Croatians know that their language is complicated (it's quite ridiculous actually) and they won't expect you to make any declinations. It is very empowering being able to speak another language. There is some wonderful Croatian literature to explore. I urge you to read some Croatian poetry, it is quite beautiful. Dobrisa Cesaric and Tin Ujevic come to mind.

Hey Gav, Declination can be learned on a single sheet of A4. You'll get p[lenty wrong but the...
I,You, he/she, we, you (lot) and they
follow some very simple patterns and can be learned without too much aggro. If you're a boring git (kao ja) then it can be fun.
Mislim da mislis da misle da to je tesko - ali nije! Stvarno!

Ribaric, da li svakodnevno govoris hrvatski ili se i ti bojis da ces pogrijesiti u deklinaciji? Grammar is one thing, but how do you find the pronunciation, guys? Do you also have to compose a sentence in your head before you speak, or does it come automatically?

I am also learning by living it. I still shock people when they realize how much I understand. I can follow a conversation and understand 80%, but can barely read the headlines in a newspaper.
I am forced to speak daily now and people are very supportive and patient with my Tarzan like way of communication.

That's just how I call it, tarzan croatian. Reading is ok for me, but there are a lot of words I still have never heard. I'm pretty good with pronunciation, but admit to being not so specific with the ch sounds. I'm looking forward to trying to speak with other tarzans in croatian. Will be a good laugh.
