Hi I am currently renovating an old stone house in Stari Grad - Hvar, at present I am just looking for some decent second hand furniture such as tables, wardrobes etc. Does anyone know where I might get such items locally or maybe in split?

Hi I can't say for quality but I do know there is a place in Solin which sells reconditioned second hand furniture. its basically run as a charity for young people who've got into trouble in the past - drugs or whatever - to give them a new start. People donate their furniture, they repair it and sell it for alittle money. I don't know the name but I can describe how to find it, if it helps.

Hi will send you a PM because the directions are a bit convoluted. The furniture looks ok sometimes but its not antiques. AS estate agents we see inside a lot of empty houses which have been empty for a few years. We often see really nice pieces - I wish we had room for them at home as we'd buy them instantly. When I tell the owners how nice the furniture is, they often just shrug and say they'll leave it for the new buyers. if they want it. I really don't think Croatians value antique furniture the way the british do. www.aplaceindalmatia.com

Hi Phil,
I think what quinne has mentioned is the RETO centre in Solin/Split, it's literally next door to the Mercator Centre which is on the road to Sibenik. The guy to ask for in there is Marko, he's a good guy originially from Mostar and he speaks good english and is really helpful. Tell him you know and Irish guy from Knin and he'll laugh and might help more, or less, who knows :-)
A lot of the stuff there is kitsch, but it's cute kitsch, and you can pick up nice sideboards etc for very little, they also have stores (2) in the heart of Split on the same street as the Slobodna offices (on the way to the bus/train station.

Hi Irac Is the place you are thinking of up a concrete track with no pavement. The building itself is a shed and there is lots of furniture outside. Across the road is a big run down office block and I think there is acr repair place or a junkyard to the right?

that's one of their places (or the Solin Branch) they´re all over the country and are doing work that should be financed by Zagreb and the EU, but they fall outside of the parameters because of the origin of the organisation and it´s concept (Spain and re-educate with faith and belief). The easiest way to it is take the coast road for Sibenik, at the traffic ligths beside Mercator swing left and take the first right after the shopping centre, then after the big block of apartments the RETO sign is on your right, easy peasy
