we never eat codfish for christmas, it's always some other fish and i can't make a proper bakalar, but whenever i had it i quite liked it. i guess i just like when someone cooks for me i also know some very catholic families and they eat meat on christmas eve.

I never said EVERYTHING is better in Croatia, you are the one using sweeping generalisations. The fact remains that Christmas in Croatia, like in many other countries, is more authentic and true to it's real meaning, rather than Christmas in England, where it is purely a commercial holiday. I wonder if you would be making so much noise about bakalar if you were living in Italy, for instance.
Calling me a Croat was supposed to be slightly derogatory, was it? May I remind you that you are married to one. A bit more respect would not go amiss. Don't bother replying. Your repartee is not witty, it's simply tiresome.

Calling me a Croat was supposed to be slightly derogatory, was it? You have an inferiority complex, quite common in these parts it seems. Who are you to say what are its true values? Religion has never been a part of my life, but xmas has. Christmas trees are a big tradition, but I don't recall Jesus putting up chocolate santas. Santa is just as much, if not more part of xmas than jesus and he was all about giving.

Which part of "Don't bother replying" did you not understand?

Which part of "Don't bother replying" did you not understand? Like the last word, huh? I'm not too good at following orders, certainly not from a nobody.

ah yes christmas....memories of sapice and other delightfull croatian cookies.
the thing i don't like about bakalar, and never have, is the fish eggs. but my mom has known that for a long time and doesn't scoop them out for me.
we eat roasted meat on christmas day just like on january 1st.
anyone eat lentils on the first of the year for "good luck". hahahaha.
always thought croatian superstitions were funny.
Dave, I made a few phone calls and Djeda Mraz said you aren't getting any presents if you don't eat your bakalar. Get with the program. You ain't English no more. Your croatian now. Forget about fish and chips. Its burek and sarma for life. cheers

croam, i think you should sometimes check things before you give some opinions, especially when you present them in such an 'all-knowing way'.
the only two days when catholics must fast and abstain from meat are ash wednesday and good friday. it is also recommended on all fridays during lent.
fasting doesn't necessarily include abstaining from meat, just eating less.
all the rest is tradition, more or less. as far as i know.
not to mention that rules like fasting and abstinence really have NOTHING to do with true faith and being a good catholic.

Gav, do you do a show on a New Years Eve? I imagine there's quite a bit of money to be made downtown on that day, no?
