I thought I'd start this thread to focus on those people who seek to reside here via property ownership - without working or owning a d.o.o. My annual visa (old law) expires in August so, today, I submitted my papers to the local police in readiness for it's renewal. One up-side about this kind of visa is that I only needed: - Proof of kataster entry for ownership (less than 6 months old)
- 2 photos
- proof of income + tranlation (less than 6 months old)
- proof of medical insurance
- the application form and 20 kuna application fee.
The lady explained the new law and the 6-month limitation. She also told me that she was aware that changes are likely but didn't want to guess at what they may be. If the changes were made before the expiry date of my current visa then she'd try to apply the new rules if she could. She explained that there may be other checks, other forms etc with any re-jigged law so she couldn't promise anything. With reference to the 6 months (residency) and 3 months (tourist) visas. She advised that her department has been expressly instructed not to issue tourist visas to foreign residents whose temp-residency visas have just expired. There can be no 6 months + 3 months = 9 months. It is worth saying that the Varazdin police have an efficient and friendly group of people in the foreigners' section who've been most helpful.

Well even if your situation is unique from others', I'm grateful to know about it. It's definitely helping me get a better understanding of what's going on with residency and what my options are, so thanks for sharing.
What do you usually present as proof of income?

Hi Ribaric - we are in exactly same position as you - bought house here in private name - no d.o.o in February 2005 - were then issued with one year residential visa until law changed - last time they only gave us a 6 month visa which is renewable mid September so we shall be in touch with Police about renewal shortly. Will keep you posted as to how we get on !

You're welcome claude. I like to be open about stuff where I can. I have a small pension (they're always small aren't they?) Each year I get a statement about the projected monthly payments for the following year. It's easily translated although, this year, they didn't ask. Any regular income will do (interest payments, dividends - it doesn't matter).

Hi valj, So you were unlucky in that your renewal time fell due just after the new law took effect. The truth is (as I give out a little sigh of relief) that your situation will arise 6 months before mine. I guess your upcoming experiences will be far more timely and valuable to us 'privateers' than will mine.
What's your next move? Are you relying on getting a 3-month tourist visa to tag the end of your temp-res visa? Am I right to assume that you have no other impediment to your visa application - just that you could only get 6 months? Croatia is my only home? I have no other alternative. You?
Spill the beans valj!

Our 6 months expire at the end of November.
Ribaric, what did you have to provide in the way of medical insurance? HR, still EHIC or private insurance? Prkbrk mentioned HR medical is required.

My tuppence worth as a home owner - you do need to show you have paid local Health Insurance and have no debts owing to HR MOH (for me about 3600 kunas a year and the statement of such cost me 40 kunas more), you do need the kastater document, you do need an updated proof of funds ( I have a local bank account, so forget the translation part - printed from my PC the day before submitted). They only need 1 photo and 20 kunas. And you still do need to see Plod for an interview.
The local plod here have told me I will get another 6 month visa - already have one - but to be honest not to sure on that and to be frank am possibly going another route that may get me a 12 month visa - am going to police on Monday so will know more then - my next post could be from UK!!!!
Oh, I was also told I could get 3 months tourist visa originally after the 6 month expired...but as Neville Chamberlain was brokering that deal I am not too sure!!!!

And the other issue here is those caught in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs/Justice backlog, such as myself who bought in Oct 2004 but have still not received permission for ownership. I applied for residency in early 2007 based on reports that a house contract would be sufficient, but sadly my local office wouldn't use its discretionary powers in the same way I understand others have.

I did ask my friendly police person that very question stevetel, a couple nearby to me are in the same situation as are, I suspect, a lot of others. She was most helpful but her responsibilities are limited to applying the law as it is. I too was unable to start the process of applying for a residency visa using only my property sale contract, luckily, my MUP permission took only 3 months so I was able to 'get in' before the new law.

I've ripped this post off from another thread and put it here as it has a clear and relevant message for this thread. It is also consistent with a number of other responses form MEPs, It looks like we have an answer for some of us but we don't know exactly what that will be or when it will apply.

Stevetel I think that you should nevertheless write to an MEP explaining what happened and that as a result of delay in granting permission you are outside favourable rules for granting residency. It's a very valid point.

Nobody will tell me what the minimum income is for this purpose. Without making it too nosey, Rib, is this a 'small' pension by UK standards only, or something that would still make it appear (or be in reality!) to be a struggle to get by in Croatia too ?

Nothing to hide mrhappy, it's about £1400 pcm nett. More to the point though, another couple living near-ish me are in the same position and they declare a joint pension of about $800 pcm (Gross) which has got them visas for two years to date.

Thanks ! I'm probably on less than £800pm once the mortgage and child maintenance have been paid, I'll pack my cases then LOL.
