Same question I just put on another thread Boris.... "Do you specifically dislike the UK Boris or is it just another country to you? Have you any connection to the UK which makes you read stories about the UK?"

Apologies , Carol , for interfering in this 'un : honestly , almost every time I'm in the company of Croats , be it in Zagreb or England or elsewheres , I am again left astounded how they perceive the Brits , what preconceived ideas and stereotypes and misconceptions they hold against us and how prejudiced ( against us ) many of them can be . Sadly , lots of folk who otherwise ( on the face of it ) appear to be quite O.K. , seem to think that the centres of Universe are Leibnitz , Graz , Trieste , maybe Muenchen if you're stretching it...and usually they prefer Yankees to Brits , anytime whatsoever , from TV , sports , cinema , attire , eating , manners ...to macchiavellian rhetorics in U.S. politics ! The only saving grace I can offer : they also seem to quite strongly dislike and mistrust the French , the Belgians and any assortment of other ( non-Germanic ) nations....

You are too sensitive Carol, it is all right for you and others to poke fun at Croatia and not the other way round.
My main source of info on the UK are CRO newspapers, and then I double check via Google.

boris.. The likes of Carol and others here are not so much sensitive, but maybe more broad in their prospective of Croatia, the truth behind the glossy holiday magazines, the difficulties people face in trying to live here as peaceful and productive human beings. I'd say that if you lived in the UK then you would have the perfect right to express your dissatisfaction, just as we do about Croatia. Those of us that actually live or have lived in Croatia know it from a different angle then say a tourist or a Croatian expat who left back in the former Yugo days. We face the obstacles here and now. It's just a shame that not more Croatians could see that things could be better, and then go out and try and change things. I have actually gone to a few meetings pertaining to the law on foreigners, spoken out to a number of people at the police station, spoken to different embassy people about the matter. The only way you will get change is if the people make it happen, so be heard and not just seen drinking coffee at the café.

Crojoe, thanks, you made a few good points. I am sorry about difficulties you and others experience in Croatia, I hope it will get better when Croatia joins the EU.
Regarding football: last time England was eliminated from the Euro Championship by Croatia, apparently the UK economy suffered to the tune of about 200 million Euros. So it is no wonder that some Croats suspect some underhand things going on the last qualifying matches.
But : why ( "very angry" ) ? Wheras I strongly agree that most of the stuff Daily Fail prints can be usually be described as utter tosh - and calculated to increase their sales to the pretentious middle and lower-middle classes ( if any such still exist , after all the events of the last 12-18 months ): if there were no dangerous obstacles , in form of taxation or worse : who wouldn't rather prefer to live in La Belle France , with all her diversity , charm , culture , gastronomic delights-de-luxe , advanced TGV-travel and so much more ( than GB can offer nowadays ) ; or in organised , conservative , polite , functional . law-abiding Germany ? ( N. B. Both countries also having in place superior medical systems : light years ahead of our poor NHS ! )

I agree with you Carol, my apology for being sometimes, as you say, childish.
But I was provoked by some people on this forum.
( N. B. Both countries also having in place superior medical systems : light years ahead of our poor NHS ! )
IMO I can assure you that neither Germany or France have better healthcare than the UK. I worked with the 'esteemed' Necker Institute in Paris for a few years and also have had the pleasure of 'hiring' numerous German doctors. The French healthcare standards were 'laughable' and the German docs were so desperate to get out of Germany that they were falling over themselves to get to work in the UK as they can easily double their salaries (mainly I admit as a fall out of the reunification of Germany). The Mail article is as usual a manipulation of stats to suit their story - if Brits can earn £11,500 more than a year than the French, but only pay about on average £800 more a year than the French for their groceries, then go figure that the rest of the survey is not worth the paper it is written on- quality of life is a major point, but France cannot IMO offer anything close to the UK in terms of scenery, culture and history- it may have some more sunshine, but hey thats a price to pay for not having to put up with the French and their self centred outlook on the world

What you must understand about the Daily Racist...ahem Mail is that it looks for any angle to slight our nation in order to justify its xenophobic propaganda. The Uk is rubbish. Then there must be a reason why...
Foreigners... all of them... nothing but illegal parasites who bring nothing to this country... They don't add they just take. We're in recession because of economic migrant Poles... we're victims of terrtosrists because of our laxity on Islam... blah blah blah.
It's really quiet pathetic... I'd rather have a root canal than spend an hour with a daily mail readers.
Yours... an ex Daily Mail employee who left because of the racist culture.

And the English don't have a thoroughly self-centred , time-warped outlook on the world ? Spin me another one , Lord Mandelson ! As for the 11K squids "difference" in earnings , who wouldn't rather earn less , but in return not have to endure the costs and utter humiliation of : Transport for London , U.K. rentals , NHS , Heathrow , boarding a ferry or Le Shuttle from U.K. , the wheel-clampers , the crime and hooliganism unknown in most parts of EUrope , soul-less chains of "pubs" and "steakhouses"...aargh , one could go on : forever , ergo - let the Brits have their 11K squids extra and let them continue to daily sweat and pee blood , for the "pleasure" of it !
