I got to play tennis with him once years back, kind of before he was super famous... well...me and about 30 kids from a sports school in Split. This was back in 1998 or something like that.

Maybe : not quite 1998 ? since he won Wimbledon in 2001 ... on a sunny Monday , I think , agains a decent polite Ozzie ( whose name escapes me at the mo ) watched the whole spectactle at the main bar , Platjad'Aro , Costa Brava , which I still recommend

Details about where he was on or around February 1998: Outcome: Winner Date: 2 February 1998 Championship: Split, Croatia Surface: Carpet Opponent in final: Greg Rusedski Score: 7–6(3), 7–6(5) In 2001 he defeated: Patrick Rafter at Wimbledon to win the competition. You are right he was already famous by then, but Wimbledon made him stand out in light he wasn't doing so well that year. Got in with a wild card. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goran_Ivani%C5%A1evi%C4%87

Yeah , it was bizarre ; and : thanxxxx for the info , CroJoe ; must add : most of the anglo-speakers at the bar were supporting Rafter , for whichever reason ( Goran's persistent swearing and arrogance ? , not discounted ! ) ; however , life can be really funny , odd , unexplainable and illogical ( like the US$/Sterling/EUro exchange rates of lately ? ) and so , Goran , somehow , won that one , his only Ever Grand Slam ! The bar , BTW , served a free flute of cava ( sparkling wine ) to everyone interested/watching , at that point ( not all bad , the Catalunyans ) !
