Or no business sense?
On Easter Day, 2,000 tourists disembarked from a cruise ship in Split and all shops, tourists stalls, souvenir places and exchange shops were closed. Only few Roma ladies were selling handicrafts, most likely made in China. A souvenir smallholder could make enough money in one day to live happily for a year, most likely.

By law must all shops be closed on that day? A bit shocking though, with so many people popping in for a visit. Like me, all those Splitights must have been eating, drinking, sleeping and wasting the day away. At least I can say I worked Saturday and Monday, plus 7 days prior to that, plus I didn't have 2000 guest knocking at my door. Where was the mayor? As entertaining, enthusiastic and business minded as he is, was he down there at the dock with all the gipsies pan handlers or bashing someone over the head or serenading the tourists with his song and dance routine?

Croats lazy? probably not in general. However, Dalmatians actually PRIDE themselves on their laziness (and the cruise ship came into Dalmatia). I heard several motos in my time there but two come to mind now "it is best if tourists send their money instead of bringing it themselves" and "you can't pay me less than i will work" (which means "I will always do less work than you pay me for")

Having been born and raised and "educated" ( somewhat ) in Zagreb , then lived in many a country ( incl. Switzerland , South Africa , Canada , Emirates , England , H.K. , BeNeLux , inter alia ) I am convinced that ( generally speaking ) the Croats are among the laziest of nations I ever encountered ( Azerbeijanis are not much better , nor the Gulf Arabs , but : that's another story ! ) ;
to the best of my knowledge and experience/s , in HR : Zagorci are less lazy , than the rest ?

Very funny , indeed ( or just : ignorant ? ) ! Well , all sorts of businesses were open in , ( your future ? ) Capital of EU , i.e. many proper leading supermarkets ( like Carrefour , world's 2nd biggest ! and Delhaize , world's 5th biggest - you have nothing comparable in HR ! ) , antiques , artworks , bric-a-brac , markets , florists , bakeries , take-away grub , exotic and usual restos , sandwich-bars , bistroes ...and , on your Holy Day , I had a personal pleasure of helping an 80+++ -old , very frail widow to attend to her dozen-items' of groceries' shopping , then me bringing it to her home , around 20.00 , on that sunny , warm evening , in an act of good faith and charity ( which made me feel good ! ) ; then I Skyped my mother in Zagreb to relate this to her ; and , being Croatian ( i.e. quite isolated from NW EUrope and the rest of the world ) , she was not keen to believe me ; on Easter Monday , all of the same outlets were open too ; seems like : some people , in odd countries , don't mind , earning a living ? Or that not everywhere is Germania , nor Vatican , as some Croats could learn ?

Try Asia or Africa, and you will find some of the worlds great lazy folks, people who make a living out of it, a true art form. So far in my travels India has been the place I have seen the most people sitting around doing nothing. I always laugh when I'm reminded of when I lived in the Philippines, and seeing 5 guys digging a hole, one at a time. The other 4 had Sam Miguel beer in their hands watching the one guy dig. We then have my own great nation of benefit spongers, who spend away the tax money, all because they refuse to work or say they have some incapacity health issue.

Here in Zagreb most stores where closed only for the Easter Sunday, and then Monday was a workers holiday and most shops where open. Maybe what really should have happened in Split is the ship company should have delayed the trip for a day, and then landed the day before or the day Easter Sunday.

There , really , may be : no need , for 365/24/7 shopping ; for many years , of my long life , we had no such things , in many a country I lived in ( and we all survived , v. v. well indeed , thank you very much ) ; but : try teaching these theories today , in downtown Toronto/Dubai/H.K./Bruxelles ! But , a supposedly " tourist " cente , e.g. Split , in this case , should play the ( commercial ) game , to some acceptable extent - or , otherwise : what's the point , of the exercise , anyway ? Bring the ship-full of foreigners , then : expalin to them that there's nothing to do , nor to spend any good EU/$$$ monies on ? You should just see the ( bad ) comments on Dutch and Belgian TVs ( (that's 2 languages , even if we count Flemish as baby-Dutch ! ) from any silly , mostly old , people , who bitch about the cruiser , having taken them " there " ( not sure , yet : if they actually know , where it was , more-or-less ? )

I hear, that, some Croats; are: so lazy, that no matter; where, or how; long, they have, lived, in the world; they still never, bothered: to learn to write, English; properly. ;D
Joking aside, Croatia is a majority Catholic nation and Easter Sunday is an extremely important cultural day for most people here. I spent Easter in Bosnia, where family members gathered from all around Europe to drink, eat and catch up with each other. I did notice that when most were at Easter mass, some were in open bars. I'm pretty sure there were also some places open in Split. Here in Zagreb, Dalmatians are often spoken of as being lazy, amongst other things and like my fellow Australians, I'm sure they'd jump at any chance not to work. Personally, I'm the laziest person I've ever met, and I'm not from Croatia.

I'm a Dalmatian and I'm very lazy. Hopefully I'll manage to be even lazier in the future. Sometimes I get the feeling that laziness is perceived as something unwelcome throughout this topic. ;D .

Not at all. be as lazy as you like, just don't grind to a halt or get added to the 300,000+ out of work folk.

Next year I know where I'm going... down to Split to welcome the terrorists (I mean tourists) with my Easter bunny suit, then charge per picture. Maybe a few chicks in tight bunny suits will add to the attraction. Will help stimulate some of those pace makers onboard

In other Roman Catholic countries like Spain or Italy I am sure everything was also closed for Easter Day.
