and they wonder why people try and cheat the government. I have to pay 350 Kuna year to this government forest company so the fat tree trunk directors can pocket the money.... and they don't even make a profit from the vast wealth at their finger tips. 20 years without an inventory?? A normal business does it each year. It's not only corruption, but pure laziness. Someone help them get out of their mahogany wood, leather cushioned chairs and get back to work. www.croatiantimes.com/news/Business/2011-10-04/22303/Croatian_state_sitting_on_badly_managed_gold_mine

sorry if I missed it somewhere Crojoe...but why do you have to pay? Do you own or rent a bit of land considered 'forest' ... Every company in Croatia pays a forest tax which is 35 Kuna month. Add that up in a year and it starts to cost. Now, why should I be paying that type of money when 1.) I don't use the forest to make money. 2.) Any forest products say like paper, chairs, desk or whatever I use to do business I am already paying tax on when I buy it or import it. Now, the wood companies are the guys that use or abuse forests, so in essence they should pay for it. But there is a tax directly for the Croatian forest department, who in the article spend more then they make and waste money.

While I appreciate that the Cro people and Govt are not too keen at selling off their "heritage" at difficult times such as these you have to wonder why not.
If the figures in the article are correct, then Cro could be sitting very pretty if it just managed its assets correctly.
Look at most other states that have sold off their assets (loose term) to be run by private companies and there is a decent long term windfall to be had.
Managing any windfall income would then be obvious the problem. You just couldn't trust any Govt to do it properly.
