Croatia Times today....
Oscar winning producer boycotted in Croatia after telling school kids there was no God
A producer on Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List was boycotted in Croatia after telling Zagreb school children God doesn’t exist. Oscar winning Hollywood producer Branko Lustig was in the southern town of Knin as part of a tour of the country to give a series of lectures and screenings of Jewish films. But after appearing in Zagreb where he told shocked pupils "If there was a God he would not have allowed the Holocaust" outraged parents in Knin refused to let their children attend his lecture at a local school. "I do not want to send my child to a lecture organised by the school so that he can be told there is no God," said one angry mum.
Some of us think that it's a d**n good reason to send your child. There's two sides to most coins.

I think that school children shouldn't be told there is a god whilst at school, and they should also not be told there isn't a god whilst at school. It's not something you can define with facts and should be left out of the education system until later on when you are old enough to discern things for yourself.
As an aside, Branko is pretty much responsible for all Croatians that have made it big in Hollywood. I had no idea he was a fellow non believer.

What is the level of religious education in Croatian schools? It is not mandatory, although you do have to mention you don't want you kid(s) in religious education. Of course it is Catholicism. I guess if you are going to public school then really it should be up to the parents. If you are going to Catholic or any religious school then what can you expect (like in India it's big for Hindu parents to send their kids to Catholic school for some reason, so will the Catholic school not mention anything about Catholicism)? If it's a private school then once again you can speak up and say yes or no. I just don't believe it was this persons right to say such stuff to children in schools, especially since he is not the parent. That is his own opinion, be it fact or fiction in his mind and heart. Religion for the most part is built on faith (with historical facts, findings and so forth). For us with freedom of thought and expression, whether you believe of not, does not make for a better or worse person. I guess the problem with history, is we never learn from history, and the same could be said about religion. It's the message not the messenger we should accept or reject.

Right? It is his duty, particularly in view of his history. The belief that god exists must not be the default position in schools, that's brain-washing.

The belief that god exists must not be the default position in schools, that's brain-washing. Ok, seeing the context in which he made this statement, I still think it wasn't right. With or without God people fight wars, kill each other and act like little devils. Behind every riffle, every bomb, every item of war there is a creator (human for the most part). The same can be said about many of the goods things in life. It didn't just appear out of thin air. I can't tell you where God came from or I would be God, nor have I seen him, but looking at the natural things of life, whoever created that, did a great job (I don't see it as being a mistake)! Of course this man is talking more about the 6 million that lost their lives (the "chosen" people), but even that number is debatable, and sometimes one does wonder if they are really "Gods People", looking at their history. Of course one does not go into the subject to deeply in case of getting into trouble, and certain someones have made it that way.
