Oh, wise ones
Even though Croatia is in the EU, the borderpost going into Slovenia from Croatia still has long queues. The problem is mainly Croatian but there are long queues at peak periods. Firstly, is there a way of finding out about the queue length, web site or web cam perhaps. Secondly, can anything be gained by coming off a junction early and using the backroads that appear to cross the border, but still next to the motorway customs post. Or is there an alternative route, again using less popular roads.
I have nothing to hide, I just hate queues
Thanks

Why not try it and see? I have never been in a queue crossing between Hungary and Croatia but I have been kept waiting sometimes, usually on the Hungary side though. About a week ago the guy breathalised me twice and seemed to be typing out a report on his computer for ages before he let me through.

In all my years in Europe I have never been breathalyzed.

There are webcams on the HAK website www.hak.hr/ - there's a webcam look up list towards the bottom-right of the page where you can type in Macelj (right?). Whether what you can see is useful, I don't know...but it looks nice and clear now. (There's also a free HAK app which also shows the webcams, amongst other things.)

In all my years in Europe I have never been breathalyzed. It could be that they do get people coming from Croatia after having the odd beer or glass of wine. Hungary has zero tolerance so the crossing is an easy target, like the radar cops catching people speeding in the 40kph zones in Croatia. In my case I probably just looked tired. I tend to work a 12 hour day on the house renovations + gardening then drive the 50 miles or so back to Hungary. This is mainly so I don't have to transport my dog at the hot part of the day.
