I am in the process of having a house built in Croatia and need to take out furniture that I have been buying in the UK over this summer to fill the house.
My initial thoughts is to hire a large sprinter van but I will be going out end of july beginning of august for a whole month. So my options are:
To hire a van for the full month To hire a van and drop it locally in Croatia To get a shipping container
Can anyone offer any help? What works and what doesn't and any companies that could help with quotes.
Many thanks

Hi
When I shipped my whole workshop worth of machinery over I just strapped them to pallets and booked them in with a haulage firm. I had 14 pallets totalling over 8000 Kg so it was a big load but worked out by far the cheapest option.
Since then I have had several smaller shipments sent out, most around double pallet size (2.4m l x 1m w x 1.8m h). These cost around £300 all in and you can get a huge amount on them. Also pretty much unlimited on weight within reason.
The downside is that you need somewhere with access for an artic lorry and loading facilities (forklift) but not to hard to find a warehouse/factory/forwarding depot close by that will help out for a small fee or a few beers for the lads.
If you need any help or advice drop me a mail, contact details below.
Cheers

I can tell you what not to do, which is what I did when I moved to Hungary. I bought a long wheelbase hightop LDV Convoy 3.5 tonne van and moved all my stuff myself in 3 trips. Each trip cost £1000 in fuel, ferry etc and I think I paid £2600 for the vehicle. In hindsight I should have driven the van back to UK and sold it but I kept it initially as everyday transport. This was because I was not allowed to buy a car until I was an official resident of Hungary, a process which took a few months. Once the MoT ran out on the van there was no option to take it back to UK so I need to get it re-registered. I could not sell it as right hand drive vehicles are pretty much worthless in mainland Europe. It is a nightmare getting it converted for driving on the right. The correct headlamps are unobtainable and I have to somehow re-route the exhaust system so the fumes exit to the left.

What you would have needed to do is prior to arrival back into the UK you would have needed to book the van into an MOT test on the day off arrival as technically you are allowed to drive a vehicle from point of entry or home to MOT station (Dover has a few). As long as you have insurance. You also would not have needed a tax disc, as this would have been classified the same as having the vehicle SORN. Better luck next time!

Hi everyone, I am planning a car trip to Rijeka passing Zagreb to collect our furniture from there. Basically, going in an empty V. Zafira so if you or anyone needs to transfer anything that will fit into it, can be arranged. It will be end of July, beginning of August time.
