I will be making a short trip to Zagreb mid February to take care of some bureaucratic necessities.
Since I will have some time on my hands, I thought a day trip to Varaždin would be nice I have not been to that part of the country yet. I was just wondering if it would be worth my time to make a trip there mid February? Most of the touristy things I have found online seem to be geared for the summer months of course.
Ribaric, your thoughts?
Thanks!

It will be a lot colder than the Croatian coast, which is kept warm by the sea.

I think a lot would depend on the weather and what you like doing/you find interesting. I'd say there won't be many tourists, so locals will have more time for you, if you like talking to locals, that is.
Qn for Ribs: when I was there in 2008 (?) there was a violin/guitar maker near the centre of town - called Vlado - chap was getting on a fair bit. He told me how, in 1944, he heard there was going to be a general call up. He was 16 or so, so he went on a fast, didn't eat for two weeks or so, and when they came for him, he was so weak that they passed him by.
Six months or so later, in 1945, he saw all the boys of his age who had been drafted and survived being marched back, prisoners of the Partizans. They were shot.
'swat he told me. I'd like to know if he's still working, any idea?
Steven - the hills to the west and south of Varazdin are very nice. I'd imagine, if it was a sunny, cold day, a walk around Toplice area could be nice, or head south on the old main road towards Novi Marof. There are some nice-looking eateries down there again, not sure about the prices! Again, depends on what you like.
