Has anybody got any thoughts or experience with house insurance. Has anybody had any dealings with a company they would recommend and a guide line to costs (Istia area). Many thanks

We have used Euroherc for the last 8-10 years and not had any issues with them. We have insurance to the value of the property (including earthquake damage)and also contents insurance (based on the value that we chose to insure for loss). For those not resident on a full time basis they do offer non-occupied cover as well. Also have an option for glass damage replacement. Not had to make any claim, so cannot comment on efficiency of them paying out!
Always very helpful and can offer a 'personalised' quote depending on your needs. Our premiums have slightly reduced each year....

Its all about finding an agent who will be your advocate if you have a claim. Without that, insurance is a waste of money, or you have to hire a lawyer to get them to pay up.
I know an agent in Split (I think she's with Allianz now or is it Merkur??), but I don't know anyone inn Istra. Sorry.
Ask around the people you know to see if anyone has made a claim and if the agent was helpful.

Thanks for that Carol. Not like the UK then where you just contact the insurance company and they access it. I don't like the sound of the need to have an advocate, too many variables. I may take a look to see if any UK companies insure abroad.

Allianz is a German company but they have offices in a lot of countries, including the UK. In each country, they open a company so you'll actually be dealing with a Croatian company. However, that's the same as all the other insurance companies too. Devon Direct www.devondirect.net/ spee in Croatian property insurance. They were very popular about 10 years ago, but i've never used them. As far as i know, none of my clients used them either - they all took my advice and went with th local agent I recommended. (Thinking about it, I should have asked for commission!) If i were you, I'd stay local when it comes to insurance. Be aware though that they slice and dice the policies quite differently in Croatia. e.g. would you like insurance against water falling from the sky or coming from a leaky pipe or flooding from the sea?
