In Hungary you have to register any chimney in use (I think with the local fire service but I'm not sure) and a sweep comes once a year to inspect it. My new heating system in Croatia is using a chimney that I suspect has not been used for some years. The chimney which the previous owner used no longer exists, as I demolished it. Do I have to do anything about registering or whatever?

You should. We have a guy who comes round about 6 monthly, looks up the chimney and says "that's OK" and writes that down in a dog eared little book. I have no idea what he does with that. I'll try to catch up with him and find out how it all works. If you have house insurance, it may have an effect on any relevant claim. My neighbour tells me that your gas supplier shouldn't supply you without regular checks.
