Hello, I'm new to this forum. I've got a question regarding Croatian nationality laws, and descent through a great-grandfather.
My great-grandfather was born on 21, January 1906 in Slavonski Brod, Croatia. Later on, he passed away on 1 August 1944.
I'm seeking to apply for Croatian nationality by descent through my great grandfather. I have his death certificate under the narodnost stating Hrvat (Croat). However, I didn't have his birth certificate, or citizenship certificate. But, I can order them from the Croatian Consulate in Australia.
Furthermore, I've done a bit of research about getting citizenship by Jus sanguinis meaning by right of blood. Also, I'm turning 19 soon. I'm thinking of waiting until 21.
In other words, it will allow planning, and save funds required. I'll learn the language beforehand. I'm thinking about booking a holiday over to Croatia in order to gain an understanding of what the place is like to live.
Sources of Information.
1. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jus_sanguinis (Article 11 of the Law on Croatian Citizenship allows emigrants and their descendants to acquire Croatian nationality upon return, without passing a language examination or renouncing former citizenship. In addition, Article 16 allows ethnic Croats living outside Croatia to "acquire Croatian citizenship" by making a written declaration and by submitting proof of attachment to Croatian culture). I know this is out of date, since the laws regarding citizenship have changed.
2. www.hrvatiizvanrh.hr/en/hmiu/croatian-citizenship/66 (under Article 11, and Article 16, I'm maybe eligible if I can meet these requirements.
3. Law on Croatian Citizenship - Legislationline. (Under Article 11).
So, far I'm eligible under these articles. However, I need some advice about applying.
Honestly, I didn't know much Croatian only some words. But, I am going to start learning it.
Here's my reading list of Croatia. Yes, I'm interested in Croatia, with it's culture, customs, and history, language, food etc. Tell me what you think of the list, I created.
