Unfortunately, you would need to find somewhere that will return the results to you with a quicker turnover time so that the test is not older than 48 hours at the point of you entering Croatia. If the test is older than that, the official advice (see mup.gov.hr/uzg-covid/english/286212) is that you will need to self-isolate and then get re-tested in Croatia (there is a list of testing centres at www.koronavirus.hr/testing-centers-in-croatia/764) at your own expense.

Do Croatians and an American spouse need to do the test beforehand? Please what would be the procedure once they get to Croatia?

The information on mup.gov.hr/uzg-covid/english/286212 says that "Croatian nationals and their family members, regardless of their citizenship, are free to enter the Republic of Croatia, without the need to prove their reasons for entry, but they must present a document proving kinship with a Croatian national (e.g. birth certificate)". So Croats (and other EU citizens/residents, plus UK citizens) definitely don't need to do a test. The spouse of a Croat would also not need to do a test, but would need to show some proof of relationship.

Do not understand 3 days. I thought the USA had the Covid thing all sorted. Most countries in Europe get a result same day, next day at latest
