Yesterday the final stage of the motorway from Hungarian border (Goricani) to Zagreb (97 km) has opened for traffic. There are no toll charges at the moment, but from January 1st the distance will be charged 30 kunas (2.80 pounds). It is now possible to drive from Zagreb to the beautiful baroque town of Varazdin(worth visiting!)in 45 minutes or less.

I'd second that on Varazdin. I am always amazed at how few tourists are there. For some reason I compare it to Bruges (without the canals) and that is always heaving with tourists. Varazdin is really worth a look, as is Trakoscan castle, not far away.

We have been telling people about Varazdin for what seems like years now, but the standard answer we get is 'they want to be close to the sea'. So what do they do - they stay in the big resorts in hotels that are 'sanitised' by foreign owned companies. There are so many areas of Croatia that are wonderful yet not visted by tourists.
