We travelled to Croatia from Italy with 3 children and since we did not want to have to go too far in the hire car we chose the Istria peninsula. Rovinj is a beautiful little town with a spectacular coastline which is a nightmare for children since the beaches are so litter ridden. We resorted to doing a `litter patrol' when we arrived at a beach before letting our 2 year old loose and picked up broken glass, plastic bags, cigarette stubs, and all manner of disgusting things. Other people at the beaches seemed unperturbed by the litter everywhere and cheerfully let their children paddle in the sea with exceedingly unpleasant scum floating nearby (we didn't even stop at such areas). We suggest a `take only photos, leave only footprints' campaign along with a ban on glass at beaches. On our final day we took a boat to one of the islands and found this to be much cleaner and a Slovenian acquaintance confirmed that the islands are better. On a more positive note we found the people friendly and enjoyed a day in Pula, although we were irritated by having to have a 4 hour tour to be able to see around Brijune national park. We would not go again, until the beaches are sorted out...
