1300 sheep have died of thirst on Croatia's Murter Island.
A two-month drought coupled with high temperatures dried out natural watering places in the Kornati National Park, where the sheep lived, United Press International reported.
Veterinary inspector Branka Gulin said preparations were underway to transfer the carcasses from the Kornati Archipelago, outstide the port city of Zadar, to an inland site, the Croation news agency HINA said.
About 3700 sheep are thought to still remain in the park. A boat carrying fresh water from the coastal towns was headed for Murter, and two Croatian navy vessels have also brought water to the island, HINA said.
