Hello Web master
My husbond Steve & I intend to buy a property somewhere between Split & Zadar this Winter. Steve was born in Croatia but has lived most of his like in the Uk & Canada and has both Uk & Croatian passports. Most of the information I have found on your excellent web site & it's various links relates to foreigners buying. Would it be simpler for us to purchase in Steve's name as a national & register my interest later

There is no doubt about it at all. If he has Croatian citizenship he can buy without the delay necessitated by getting Foreign Ministry permission that non Croatians have. I speak as a Brit with property interests who has just obtained dual citizenship. I would previously have had to either buy through my Croatian wife, who happens to be a lawyer, or wait 6 months for Foreign Ministry approval, or set up a Croatian company and buy through that. Now I can simply buy in my own name.

Just something else to add...........Note that as Croatian citizen you are exempt from paying tax(VAT) on your first purchase..up to 600sqm of land calulated per Croiatian national. The tax is 10% of the purchased price and building costs are with some Vat exemption....info from the Croatian Ministry in London. We have mangaged this route smoothly and VAT free,if you are registering as a Crooatian citizen returning to the country within 5 yrs of purchase (land or House). Hope this is useful for many visiting this board. Long live Croatia

How would you register your interest later? If you wanted to get your nmae on the land registry, would you not require MAF approval?
