Hi,
Could anyone tell me how much a ticket for the sleeping car on the train from Zagreb to Split is? From what I have read there are no couchettes, but only sleeping car, so it would be good to know if the price of this facility is acceptable for a backpacker. If not I'll probably stay one night in Zagreb and take the early train to Split on the next day.
Thanks in advance,
Ulf, Sweden

I have had a look for you on the Croatian railway website. First class ticket costs about 212 kunas one way (about 28 euros). This is standard first class one way ticket. No prices are available on the website for sleeper train although I selected the sleeper option. The website is www.hznet.hr, unfortunately the website is available in Croatian language only. Hope you have a nice time in Croatia Mira

What with the new motorway open, it is now much better and cheaper to travel to Split by bus - it takes less than 5 hours (it takes 9 hours by train!).
In most cases, buses are quite comfy.

Thanks for your help, Mira and Anna. I might actually take the bus instead if the price is ok. The reason why I wanted to go by train was that I've bought an interrail card, but I might not save that much money in the end....

I've never taken the night train (didn't even know there WAS a night train service between Zagreb & Split!). But my wife and I have regularly used this train service during the daytime - in both directions - and I recommend it. True, the stock has probably seen better days but the compartments are private, there's a decent basic buffet car, and it's a great way of seeing the country. That first glimpse of the Adriatic as you arrive on the coast is overwhelming. I'd choose rail over coach any day. It's a bit like travelling on Croatia's slightly downmarket version of the Orient Express! And it's bloody cheap...
