My wife and I saw the program on Channel 4 last week about Croatia, and from what we saw, we loved the place. Although we're both a young yet, we think we'd like to move there when we're a little older. Until then, we'd love to have a holiday home to visit a few times a year, and perhaps rent it out the rest of the time to cover the costs.
They visited a nice looking Island, who's name I can't remember. There seems to be quite a few islands. My wife and I were looking for a three/four bedroom place looking over the sea, with golden beaches within walking distance, but also private swimming pool. Reasonable access (10 mins by car) to the town would also be important. We like either ultra modern new built properties, or very old character properties in a good state of repair. I appreciate this would not be cheap, although to be honest I haven't a clue how much this sort of place would cost, and if it was too much, then we'd have to look at something with a sea view, but perhaps a little further inland. However, what we don't want is something in the centre of a town.
There seems to be flights from the UK to Split, Dubrovnik and Rijeka, all of which have some islands off their coast. We've decided to spend a couple of weeks there this summer, and definitely want an island house.
Our main question, therefore, is which islands should we be looking at, and how long would it take to get to them from the UK? Which islands do most people head for, and which has the largest number of ex-pats resident on it?

There are a few islands in Istria, but from Rijeka downwards there are close of 1,000 of them. Explore Vis, good connections by fast ferry to Split, still undeveloped and property is still reasonable.

It looks to me that you need to do a bit more research before narrowing your options. Croatian coast is long and very, very diverse. There are many considerations to take into account and recommending ‘an island’ out of the blue can hardly be suitable.
Maybe good place to start would be to decide on your budget. The property you are after could be pretty costly in a popular area. Good modern apartments with private pools are quite rare and, if they command nice see views as well, the price can be silly.
I would advise looking for an old house in need of renovation (if you limit yourself to old houses in very good condition only you options are going to shrink), maybe further from the coast but with nice (sea) views where you can build your own pool. Such property would, if nicely done, be also very attractive for rental purposes that you want.

Shane, Aksana, Lufthansa flies from London to Split daily via Frankfurt (the last leg is operated by Croatian Airlines), Czech Airlines does the same for less money. Don't go in summer when the area is full of tourists; the best time to visit and enjoy the coast would be April-May and September-November. Do some preliminary research before you go through reputable British sites. Additionally, I can recommend www.croatianhouse.com which is run by my friend Paul Bradbury and his Croatian fiancee Miranda Milicic. They work on the island Hvar which is 1.5 hours away from Split by catamaran (service runs daily) and is not overdeveloped. Good luck on your search, George

I am an ex pat living in Hvar and married to a Croatian! As mentioned previously there are a number of vairables that you need to decide upon before making the jump! Not least which aiport is most convienent to fly into, as the last thing you want is a long journey this end.
I have my own company,Balustrade d.o.o., which acts for purchasers looking to buy in Croatia. I have 15 years experience in estate agency in the UK and have bought several properties in Croatia, so i know the ropes and pit falls!
