As for paying taxes, working legally, having a company etc, why not check with the Hvar tax office (who checked our operation a few days ago) before spreading anonymous posts over the internet.

Sandra ( who are you rearly),you said you would list the reasons why it is better to buy through croatian agents , but have not done so???.I have no connection with Paul Bradbury,but any body who puts his picture on his web site and gives a speil about himself cant be hiding from anything, maybe the people that are not happy with the foriegn agents have tried to get information from them and then tried to go round the back door, as many brits try to do. are the croatian agents afraid of competition???

Firstly let me say me make it clear I am Martin Westby –I help Brits and other “foreigners” buy in Croatia at my site www.croatia-holidayandhome.co.uk

I hope everyone else contributing to this thread is as clear to his or her backgrounds.

I am not an estate agent. Based on years of difficulty of trying to complete in Croatia I wrote a book to try to help with the process and also realised the key to success is to deal with agents who spend time ensuring the title is clean-before listing it on their websites-and who know how to do the necessary paperwork for a foreigner to complete.
I myself wasted an enormous amount of time with an agent on Vis (regulated) and a solicitor in Trogir.

I have spent a long time through my own research, or from people who visit my site, tracking down agents who fit these criteria.
I then contacted their clients to get testimonials.
I also contacted every estate agent from the Croatian Chamber of Commerce.

Market forces in any emerging country will mean that overseas agents will enter the market-they are not bad just because they come from overseas- they are bad if they do not know what they are doing.

From my experience there are as many rogues and crooks, operating as Croatian estate agents, from overseas as there are as Croatia nationals.
The debate should be about integrity not nationality.

Thus the agents that advertise on my site should be of the more professional and reputable type, and are both Croatian and foreign.

That all said brings me to the point that since January of this year I have been recommending my clients to see Paul Bradbury and 15 have completed and sing the praises of his services.
On top of this he must have many other clients not recommended by me who have also completed.

I recommend that you make decisions on as many facts as you can accumulate and try to avoid the gossip and the hearsay, and as Paul says in the thread, can we hear from the “relative” directly please because if Paul is guilty of anything I for one would like the details, otherwise a cynical person may suspect commercial motives.

As you say, I need to do some more research. I'm visiting Istria next month and will post any valid information I find on this forum.

I think this is a great way that we can all learn from the experience of others and find out about 'cowboys', in addition to learning who the professional agents are.

As Martin Westby says, it's about integrity not nationality.

Agree with you... we should learn from the experience of others and find out about those cowboys! Whether they are English, foreign, or maybe Croatian agents we should avoid them!

Yes there are bad English, foreign, and Croatians. And there are those who come to Croatia to make a quick buck and take avantage of the situation and people looking to buy a property.

Why the many English do business in Croatia in real estate and make troubles? They not good and not know much information as Croatian real estate agents.

For the new guy buying abroad there is laways confusion and with no particular knowledge of a country or region this will always be a problem. I started looking at Croatia about 6 months ago, when reports reached me and while I am very interested, everyone seems to have jumped on the Croatia bandwagon and prices have shot up through the proverbial roof (if you can afford a property with one on!).

We are being led by websites owners who arrived in the country two minutes ago 'who are now expert expats', and additionally it would seem if anyone twigs you are British the price just keeps on rising.

Now I could be totally wrong here, but I wish I scould find some people prepared to help a Brit, who's had enough of the Uk and wants to find value and a new community to be part of - Not a specualtor ar Developer.
