Are there advantages in acquiring Croatian `residency', if that residence is an island? For example, are you entitled to cheap Jadrolinija tickets on the basis that the state wants to keep islanders in touch?

All island residents are entitled to cheaper fares on Jadrolinija ferries (inc. foreign nationals!)

Not now as far as I know. The state benefits will come in force beginning next spring. If your car is registered on an island you will pay 30% less for its transportation on a Jadrolinija ferry. Not sure if passenger fares will be also discounted.
