Hi,
Does anyone know if it is possible and also a good idea to get builiding insurance when renovating/reconstructing a property in Croatia ? We will be employing a company for most of the work but also have a few individuals working for us. I have concers about accidents on site.
Cheers.

I insured my Croatian home. It cost more than 50% less the cost to insure my heap car. Apparently only 1% of Croats insure their homes. EU requirements are 30%. So that's something else that needs some work on by the Politicians. 60 quid, including contents was the cost. At that price you can't NOT insure, I don't think.

I've had a quote from Devon Direct for insurance - but not as cheap as you quote. Did you use a Croatian company? Thanks Jo

Hi,
I run Devon Direct and feel the need to defend our policies as we are still the only broker in the UK who can offer this. If you got the cover that cheap it is likely that it won't cover you for what you would expect from a UK policy. As you have stated the culture is not one of protected investments with insurance and from the policies that I have seen it shows. The liability side of things is very poor in general, and can you imagine having to defend yourself in a croatian court for a large liability claim, unless of course you speak the language! Caveat Emptor!!!

Devon Direct, never heard of them, but it sounds complicated using a UK company to insure in a place as embroiled in red tape as Croatia. And, NO insurance policy EVER lives up to what you 'think' it does. From my experience with the jokers in the UK who do it all by phone.

Hi,
I can well believe a claim on a Croatian Insurance policy could be embroiled in red tape (especially when you don't speak the language). I can assure you that what ever medium is used to sell our product we have the backing of Lloyds, which as you will be aware are one of the worlds foremost insurers which consumers can rely on. We have worked very hard with underwriters and the Croatian Insurance Directorate to be able to meet the demands of UK residents for insurance for their properties in Croatia. Due to the demand we have from our clients for this product, we are assured that it continues to meet their expectations.

I really do doubt what you have said means NOTHING in reality, in Croatia, or anywhere for that matter. Save the bull for people who are gullible. I have been insuring things/businesses for fifty years, everywhere. As the world turns they all get worse BUT, and this is the saving grace, are LESS intelligent as time moves on. LESS intelligent. That goes for a lot of things, to be honest. Croatia. Not yet in the loop, I would suggest.
