Hi, we have just been informed that our papers have left the Foreign Ministry and have been forwarded to the Culture Ministry for approval. Apparently the culture ministry have first refusal on buying any properties that they deem are of significant cultural value. We bought on Hvar. Has anyone heard of or had experience of this ? Any help much appreciated. Cheers. Frederick.

There have been news articles concerning this here in Croatia in recent days. Aparrently it only applies if a foreigner purchases an old rock construction house from a local. To date, the ministry has not purchased any of these properties so you need not worry. It's just a formality that they have first choice on purchasing such properties of historical value.

Franchise So this does not concern Croatian citizens. No matter what the age of the stone house or historical value? Where did the article appear? I had another question for you franchise, how much capital do you need to start a subway sandwich in Croatia.... I never seen any there?

There's a Subway sandwich franchise 2 doors down from Hotel Dubrovnik just off Trg Jelacica right in the middle of Zagreb. Been there for at least a few years.
We always laugh at the "we bake our own bread' sign, to think we come all the way to ZG so we could eat spongy cardboard American fast food chain bread... (no, we've never eaten there. But the ad makes us laught.)

Thanks FranchiseCroatia. Did the articles say how long it takes for the Culture Ministry to rubber stamp the approval ? Hopefully we are not long from getting our approval.
Cheers.

Actually there was a story on the weekend news about the policy, although they did not specify how long the ministry takes in deciding whether to purchase the property or not. As to the question of the age of the building, I'm quite not sure whether it matters, its more a historical point of view concerning stone construction properties.
LoveU2, to open up a subway the price is in the order of USD$94,500 at the lower end, to USD$251,500. The location plays a large part in determining what the actual cost will be. Currently, there are three subways in Zagreb, the latest opening at the King Cross Jankomir shopping centre, and there are other locations about to open in Osijek, Rijeka, and Split.

U2 I have to pick you up on this....you complain about Croatia being influenced by foreign crap, and you want to start a subway? I have no problem with subway or any other company but it is no better than McDonalds, burger king or anything else

U2 I have to pick you up on this....you complain about Croatia being influenced by foreign crap, and you want to start a subway? I have no problem with subway or any other company but it is no better than McDonalds, burger king or anything else Emiz, it is not to open subways exactly, I was thinking of a small sandwich shop.... to get an idea of cost there. I make better sandwichs than subways. The bread at subways taste a little weird like really fluffy like cotton candy. It has no substance. I was thinking a little sub shop like they have around here in Calif, you can get hot soups and sandwich, salads. I just wanted to have an idea of start up cost... I know what it would cost here in CA. roughly. So to open subways there cost that much that means I will probably be able to start a shop with less$. I was just thinking of things I can do over there business wise. I am tired of being at home, I am bored! My husband would like me to work because he knows I am bored . I use to do Real Estate here in Ca. I am tired of it! I want something different. When I get to Croatia permanently I want something to do... so I am trying to think of things that might take off....but won't be a burden to do ;D.... like a sandwich shop. I have one other thing I really want to do but it will take time to come up with a plan because I am totally ignorant of how to run this type of business but I know I would love doing it.... but that is under wraps for now!

by the way " I hate McDonalds, Burger King...."
I have eaten at mcD's probably 1 time a year Burger king I have not eaten at since probably 2 years ago.
I have eaten at subways a few times a year and I am always disappointed... I like Togo's, I eat there maybe every other month.
I like in & out burger that I will eat once a month if I get a chance.... very clean, you can watch them making your burger.....That is about the only burger I will eat.
Sorry i just thought i mention that... I know we are off topic... hahaha
