We have just returned from our house in Pula. Our last night there, we left the house at 8pm and returned at 10 pm, to find the door had been kicked in and the house ransacked. Obviously its quiet now and theres not many people about. The only thing they found was my sons portable dvd player, sods law the only night we left it behind as the battery was flat. We had all our money and passports on us, so no worries there. Plain closed police arrived, smelling of drink, but very efficient. Luckily Pevec was open on Sunday, as no one knew of a24 hour locksmith. Just a warning, i know it happens here in England too, and the police said we must have been watched or followed. So if you are around in the closed season just be extra vigilant and make sure you have new style security as we were a bit complacent, relying on the old locks whith thier aluminium bracket as apposed to the new steel ones.

Sorry to hear this, I hope you haven't been overly upset by it. I been "done" twice in London and I definitely over-reacted but, looking back, I was the only one to suffer as a result. Suffice to say I now regard such people as low-life who will never amount to anything.

Thanks, it did make me think of home in London funny enough, i suppose the point we are making is check the effectiveness of your locks. We were amazed at the choice at Pevec and will definately be updating the security.

Insurance. Apparantly only 1% of Croats insure their house and contents. In the UK I got robbed more times than I remember, plus a gun attack...well, I had the gun, and attacked the intruder...Pretty dangerous that, in the UK. You can do time for sneezing on an intruder in the UK. Insure. It's dead cheap.

I agree with Alsdoloubles. My flat (29 sqm) and contents - as well as 3rd party things like my washing machine breaking down and flooding downstairs - cost me just over £40 for the year with Croatia Osiguranje. A complete bargain for the peace of mind that brings!
