Croatia is undoubtedly on the path that leads to full membership of the EU, European Parliament President Josep Borrell said in an address to the Croatian Parliament in Zagreb on Wednesday.
Borrell, who is on a two-day official visit to Croatia, said the European Parliament supported Croatia's full membership of the EU.
It is in the interest of the European people that this part of Europe is politically stable, economically developed and integrated with Europe, Borrell said.
Croatia must apply all regulations from its Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU, Borrell said, adding that this meant rooting out all forms of discrimination against EU citizens wishing to buy real estate in Croatia.
Panic in Zagreb?

Borell told Croats that people from the EU countries are not foreigners, but the citizens of Europe, as you (Croats) will be soon. I like that!

Then they must make sure that they also stop all discrimination against European Firms trying to open up a business in this country. Also there open hostility exists and they try everything to make your life impossible.

Am I right in thinking that joining the EU would have to go to a referendum of the people? H

Yes, that is right, www.eu-pregovori.hr/default.asp?jezik=2could you imagine if the people say "nay" b u g g e r off ;D In Slovenia, which I suppose is a close, but not similar place there was a low turnout but a high yes vote. So will those who say "nay" be bothered to do so?

you must not be looking very hard hajduk, and unless the stretch of rock between trogir and the poljud constitutes dalmatia, then it's definitely that you're not meeting the right people. Apart from politicians, people working with culture, music, community groups, business people, sports people (remember footballers can go and play in any of the EU countries without worrying about visa's) and a lot of people who wish to get out to relatives in the likes of Germany, UK, Ireland, Austria, Italy, and do it legally, well, without this majority I guess it must only be 50-50.

True I do not often venture north beyond Sibenik Don't get me wrong i have everything to gain by EU membership, but it doesn't seem to me , admittedly with a very unscientific poll, that it it is a forgone conclusion that the majority will vote yes... Hajduk.

You gotta travel more!!! Even as far as Bilice!
Nothing is a foregone conclusion anywhere and the government will be very adept at manipulating public opinion as they have been doing for so long. I mean, when they presented that the only reason Croatia wasn't already a member state was because of some judge in Holland.....especially when they rolled out all the various right wingers from EU member states to support their election campaign in 2003 and "confirmed" they would be members by 2008 at the very latest. It's sad!
But there is a strong majority in favour of at least having the choice to vote on going into the EU, and it would be shprt odds of a NO victory in a referendum!

With external debt at a high level how will Croatia even be able to survive within the EU. Fthe following was on HRT yesterday
"Croatia’s external debt in the first two months of 2006 has risen by 700 million euros and has reached 26 billion 200 million euros. In an analyses conducted by the central bank requested by president Stjepan Mesic, the situation is described as still being under control. However, if the tendencies recorded so far were to continue, this could result in a debt crisis. If the current trend were to continue by the end of the year the ratio of debt in GDP will reach 86 percent, while the borderline tolerance is 80 percent."

i am 1 million percent anti EU. The only people that are going to benefit from croatia joining the EU are huge corporations and foreigners wanting to buy property here . Croatia needs a new government, not the EU!! We need foreign investment , not foreigners buying realestate here. I have nothing against foreginers opening firms here, paying taxes employing croats and spending their profits wherever they want. BUT ...realestate prices are already inflated far beyond the reach of average croats thanks to foreign demand . Sanader and co are traitors !!!!. I know how they operate and that briddge t o peljesac along with all the other road building theyve been doing is nothing more than using an entire country for personal gain. I am absolutely convinced that the EU has nothing against this forced crisis state that croatia is in, they have absolutley nothing against the beaurocracy and corruptuion in croatia, the EU want average croats to think that the EU will save them from that!!!! So..in the very near future we will have no option but to join the EU ( wicked taktics) And today...INA and PLIVA are using every wicked trick up their sleeves to increase their share prices as theyd love to sell out to foreigners before croatia becomes EU property. Croatia is being torn to shreds by these politicians and foreign investors!!! We need a new government!!! 4 million people on the last prime realseste left to exploit iin sth eastern europe is more desirable than the average croat can imagine. NO TO THE EU!!!! Sanader has spent his entire mandate travelling to foriegn countries for EU talks and we havent had a referendum yet....hes waiting until hes absolutely sure that croats will vote for joining the EU!!! what a manipulator!!Hes proved himslef a very competant liar in other countless instances. Hes prioritied road and bridge building while banks are making a killing off of people who cant buy property in their own country because its too expensive for them !!! and unemployment!! ? and hes building roads!!!!None even travells on the new freeway..its too expensive for the vast majority of croats!!! The old , adequate roads are packed with traffic, even trucks avoid the expensive freeway!!!hey...let me build a road mr sanader. These political traitors and the EU absolutley disgust me. Just watching radimir cacic on tv the other day( says it all) ..convincing us that he knows his stuff when it comes to road and bridge building...bahahaha i dont know ..that guy has his fingers in everything . how much money do they want!!!! ?? im convinced that the EU has given our political leaders a green light to corruption , freeload money,,profit in every which way..so that we will be on our knees with no option other than our EU " saviours" !!!! NO TO TH EU!!!!

....a new government with new policies, without EU. Its as simple as that. Every dumb eff on the street knows what good policies are...the only thing holding back croatia is these corrupt politicians..we simply need new leaders ( not the eu ) noone can tell me that the EU arent happy that Suker is running croatias economy!! eg: if i starve a dog ,keep him in a cage, eventually the dog will be soo hungry that he will eat anything, and he will leave his old owner happily and go live with his new, generous owner who told the old owner to starve the dog!! i know..not the best example but im sure u know what i mean. The new owner is the EU who has nothing against the corruption in croatia, they actually encourage it. i am absolutley convinced that our politicians have been told by EU people,,,that their corruption is OK as far as they are concerned. thats why our politicains are currently in a power and money feeding frenzy . we are in the middle of a transitional perid from intentionally forced chaos to EU ownership and control. I just hope that they dont get away with it !!!!

You can actually see the level of corruption in croatias political magazines when you see anti Boris Miksic articles , absolutley ridiculos allegations exagerated like nohing ive ever seen before..Tha national actually desribed Miksics factory in the US as producing tree sap!! Vote Boris Miksic!!!!! it will irritate people such as Linic, mesic, sanader, cacic, pasalic, suker etc.... NO TO THE EU!!!!!!!!!
