Only by observation, nothing scientific, but Varazdin is awash with foreign tourists, great herds of 'em tramping about the place in groups. Each with a guide telling tall stories about how Franz Ferdinand stayed here, or Zrinski has a mistress there ....... Lot's of "gee Abner, that's soooo cute" or "Himmel Wolfgang, das is wunderbar" to be heard. It 's mostly the SAGA and blue rinse brigade but they do seem to find something about the place.
There is a lot of resto work going on and the town is really looking good, the pansions are full although I don't know about the the big hotel. We have street cafe's everywhere and it's a devil of a job to get a table. There's always something going on somewhere, the local tourist office have done well IMO. As Mambo regularly points out, you've got to offer the tourist a good service and, for a town with no coast, no mountains, no waterfalls etc... this place is cookin'.

Just back from Hvar, tourist numbers are definitely down and I read that the market has been really poor in Dubrovnik. I believe Dbv was warned by the tourist board not too hike prices they ignored it and they are suffering because of it, it wasnt good value last year but as they are now , they are even less value, I think the same has happened on Hvar. Brac is hopping, Ciovo holding its own, for us anyway. All records on tourists arrivals are being broken every week in Split, they must be going somewhere!!!!But not to the overpriced regions, tourist doesnt translate in to stupid. Our coastal props are the same as last year so far, no uplift

I heard that Dubrovnik is charging 45 Kuna for 0,5 L Beer !!!
Compare that to other parts of Croatia where you will pay 12 to 15 Kuna for half a liter.
No wonder that the bars remain empty.
