Am looking at buying a one storey, flat roof house. Does anyone have the slightest idea how long it will take between submiting the plans and approval. The house has an old building permit to go up 2 more levels (1971). Hvala

Depends on how much you want and can push the whole thing, but calculate a minimum of 6 months if it goes fast, one year is more like it, but don't be surprised if it takes a few years.
If the old building permit is still valid and you are building according to what is written there it becomes a lot easier. If you make any changes e.g. add a terrace or change an outside wall......the fun starts all over again. First you will have to go for a location permission and then for a building permission. And all this time your neighbors can stop you dead in your tracks, because you will need their signature to continue.

I understand the technical answer is each body you have to submit your plans to are obliged to accept or reject the plans within 30 days. Reality can be longer. A LOT longer!

In our case we were dealing with personnel that had no clue what the hell they were doing.
The best one was an inspector (yes, they all show up) who told us that we had to install running water in a walk in freezer ! If we did not do that he would not approve the building permission !
Never forget the look on his face when I asked him how he envisioned running water at temperatures of - 10 and - 20 C.
For installing some machines we had to make a project and eventually it took more than two years to sort of complete all the paper work.
And that was installing a machine in an existing building !

I'm just about to launch into a very small building project, nothing more than closing-in under three balconies. The plans make it clear how the house was built so it's not an option just to do it and forget it.

my dad went to th local "opcina" today, AGAIN...it must be the 50 th time. the "man" responsible for giving building permits has once again told him to come back next wednesday!!!!!CHRISTMAS holiday time !!!
hes been telling my dad to come back next time for about 2 years.
my cousin just moved to croatia from australia , with her husband and kid. she lives in a beautiful dalmatian seaside town. i saw her last week ..she told me that " they dont let you do anything in this country" and that croatias politics make her sick, the corruption etc..
shes now planning to stay here for about 3 years or so , till her apartment gains on value, then shes going to sell it and move back to australia, and shes only been here for about 5 months.
