According to an article in todays Metro 90% of the 700 foriegn companies registered in Zadar county over the last 3 years have not submited their financial reports to FINA or paid any taxes. The article infers that the majority of these companies have been set up to purchase property and do not actually operate as business's.
That's a large percentage, doesn't exactly do much for the image of foriegners buying up Croatian property.
I should say that i might not have the details exactly correct.

I'd believe that 90% of companies are set up to enable people buy property. Very surprised though that almost none of them have an accountant to file the annual accounts. Or maybe they think they do...!

That's what I was thinking, perhaps their accountants aren't doing the job they're supposed to be.

Just knock the houses down if they don't make the returns or pay taxes ;D Maybe let the local authorities take possession and turn the properties into social housing for the local youngsters who can not afford to purchase  Cynical - wot me...... |

and on the subject of social responsibility maybe take the revenue from travel agencies and use it to fund research into greener ways to travel?

I'm all for taxing travel and for the money to be used on developing 'green' travel initiatives, but I am afraid that the government would just use the money as another form of tax and not put it to any 'green' use. £20 a sector for European flights would generate a massive fund for developing a more carbon neutral transport infrastructure.

Think of the large amount of tax that has not been collected by not processsing the house ownership permits quickly enough.

you mean when people just let their houses/ apartments out illegally because they give up waiting the permission to own and therefore the rental licence within a reasonable time?

That'll be the ones! Plus all those other things you can't get without MOJ permission - some people just do 'em anyway.
Nobody cares.... allegedly.
A thought... Is it possible to wait the same length of time to pay the tax on a house purchase that it took to get the MOJ permission to own it? (from the original application date) - on the basis that "you took 3 years, so will I".
Some people would be long dead, jelda?

I really don't know why people have taken this seriously. The standard of journalism in Croatia in my experience is appalling.
Anyone with a brain knows that foreign companies and managers are far more honest than Croatian ones.
Was obviously written by some covetous jealous xenophopic journalist who felt like an anti-foreigner rant.

Strong words andy, ones that could get you labeled as you've labeled others.
You missed the point that these 'business's' are not anything more than a company name set up for the soul purpose of purchasing property.
I doubt that mr. and mrs blogs from liverpool ever intended to run a business here let alone know how to run one. They just wanted an easy way to buy a house.

Sorry if the truth hurts.
I think you have missed the point; I am quite aware many set up business for purchasing property.
But I can't see your point at all. The headline is blatantly anti-foreigner. And when people are frustrated from sending returns because it takes 4 years to get paperwork from the f***wits in a Croatian ministry, (or in several cases have lost the paperwork), its the innocent that get the rap. Very strange indeed

Oh for Petes the majority of foreigners that I know that have set up companies to purchase think that they can get away without paying a bookeeeper or accountant and think it is an unnecessary expense. I am blown over on a weekly basis listening to foreigners that have done this, thinking that they can get away with it. A great one I heard last week was "but I have no furniture in my apt and im not renting so why do I have to pay someone to look after my company". whats that go tto do with the price of peas ? Guess what services cost, company address returns etc,
If you open a company a real live company in any country you have to make returns so why do they think roatia is different? I just dont get the stupidity !!!! Its not bashing its stating a fact and we wouldnt put up with it in any Country !
