hello,
only tri-band cellphones will work in croatia (the croatian standard is gsm900).

I live in the US and have checked into this. The only cell phone company I found that could work there is Nextel. The only problem is that you have to buy or rent a second phone. The cost to buy it is somewhere around $200.00 to $300.00. With this phone you take the chip out of your regular Nextel phone and put it into this phone. Then you can use it in Croatia. While you are in Croatia all calls made to local numbers in Craotia are just that local calls. If you call the US it will be international long distance calls.

Just an added note to this. I bought a Motorola cell phone in Croatia about 3 years ago. While you are the all you have to do is buy another number and minutes. I think this is cheaper than buying or renting a phone with US company.

If you are planning to just buy a SIM card in Croatia and put it in your own phone, make sure your phone is not 'locked' into your home network.
Unless you are planning regular trips, or living in Croatia, it is probably not worth buying a SIM card for a short trip. I bought a Simpa (HT Mobile) card, which cost about 350Kn (?). Calls will cost less if you buy a phone on contract with a monthly payment
If you don't need a mobile, the payphone system is good, and cheaper.

I think some phone shops in there do this service, price is about 300kn.

Like I said before I bought a phone in Croatia witch cost me about 200Kn. I think it is with VIP. Then when I leave I give the chip in the back of the phone to my cousin. As long as he uses it about once a month when I get back I put the chip back into my phone and all I have to do is add min. to my phone. It cost me about 200.00 Kn every year.

I brought my dual-band cell phone with me last year to Croatia but had to call T-mobile to "unlock" it first because I was going to use it out of the country. Bought the VIP chip and calling card package for 350 kn. and that was it,very simple! When your minutes are up you just buy another calling card, which you can find at any "trafika" for about 100 kn.(matters how many minutes you want)
