I know that most people writing are asking for help from others with experience of Croatia but in this case I am not. I am writing to say that when the Croatian Tourist Board's ads on UK TV describe Croatia as "How the Mediterranean used to be", it seems to me to be totally true.
I set out to find long term rental accomodation in Dalmatia prior to deciding if I wished to live there and buy a home. I have found nothing but kindness from the Croatian people and kindness so overwhelming sometimes I can hardly believe it. I was fortunate enough to find an apartment (which required some decorating etc but basically ok) in a beautiful central Dalmatian village for £170 per month! Of course I must also pay electricity etc but these are very small. It is less than sixty metres from the blue Adriatic (last week when I was there the water was 25 degrees)
although I cannot see it because it is beyond a small hill but I think this will protect from the winter winds. The property is 40 years old and figs, grapes, kiwis etc are almost hanging into the living room.
But to return to the people...they are so kind and I have met only help and interest. No, I do not speak Croatian but I am trying to learn and will be taking lessons.
I have been there for three months now, travelling back to the UK now and again either via Trieste where I leave a "not so new" British car although I am about to try Split via Bratislava to Birmingham.
I cannot praise Croatia enough and after all the help and kindness I have received, the least I can do is give my honest opinion of what I have found.
Chris.
