(News Agencies)
A Croatian newspaper reports that the United States has asked Croatia to accommodate refugees and keep them out of NATO and European Union territory if a flare-up in Serbia's breakaway Kosovo province provokes a mass exodus.
The daily Jutarnji List said on Thursday Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Daniel P. Fata had broached the issue with a Croatian military delegation in Washington in September.
He asked if Zagreb was ready to "protect NATO's borders" in the event of a refugee crisis. Croatia's near neighbours Italy, Slovenia and Hungary are NATO and EU members. Croatia is expected to join NATO next year and the EU some time later.
"The delegation gave a positive answer, saying Croatia already had experience with housing refugees," the daily said, citing unnamed Croatian sources. "Croatia is expected to monitor its borders and prevent refugees from crossing into the EU."
Croatian officials were not immediately available for comment and U.S. officials in Zagreb declined to comment.
Who is going to pay for this?

Simple answer Mirko....same as before...not Croatia! UNHCR, Red Cross, EU (then EC), USAID, International Relief Agencies etc. The "refugee" crisis in 1991-5 made moe money for Croatia than tourism in the 2001-3 preiod (and by god does Croatia make money from tourism). There are any number of "businesspeople" who made their fortunes from international aid, not to mention politicians, the church (while also being illegal, it is also immoral for the church to sell on humanitarian aid, even if it's through a 2nd outlet). Croatia already got a lump of refugees from Kosovo after the bombings and ramped up violence in the late 90's. Since they arrived they've made life a little different for locals (while being largely excluded from life), but Croatia has more than enough space to house potential refugees, and if aid money is actually accounted for this time around the whole country will benefit! (News Agencies) Who is going to pay for this?

bebewanna - have you ever been to an EU country?? Take a look around you sometime. There are a lot of refugees (mostly economic refugees) in Britain, France, Germany etc etc. There are so many people from other countries that its normal to be around people froma different culture. Then come to Croatia and take a look around you here. If you discount the short stay tourists, almost everyone is Croatian. So it really is nonsense to suggest any nimbyism on behalf of the EU.

I don't know, only guessing... but maybe the EU is trying to limit the number of muslims who come to live there. However that would completely contradict the policy operated by the British government as described to me by my friend was a visa officer in the British embassy in one the major muslim fundamentalist hotspots. If Croatia was in Nato though, wouldn't Croatia be the first country inside the border rather than the last country outside it? Maybe the question was just "Is Croatia willing to fight as part of an EU/ Nato force?".

This reply is to bebewanna,
I have dual Croatian and American citizenship, and was wondering why did you live so far away (Hvar) from where you worked (Split)? Also, in some of your posts you used all caps; I am not sure why as it appears you were yelling at the readers.
But .... the actual post that made me reply to you, which aggravated me, is your statement that Croatians are not used to work as much as Americans (You wake up at 5 and come home at 20 or 22). In my experience, and I have lived 29 years in Croatia, then 22 in the USA, it is quite the opposite. Croatians are hard working people, and they do not have many privileges as natural born Americans who live in the US do. I would love to read why did you leave the USA in the first place? The US is a great country, but so is Croatia. Please enjoy the beautiful country you had the privilege of knowing and do not insult or judge the people who you really do not know or understand.
Thank you,
Babawanna
