This is such a great topic. I've had a lot o' laughs. 7 months here. I am still of the opinion...Croatian food is...boring. My UK (Croatian) wife tells me, it's stodge...and she can't keep to her Atkins diet. She lost (TONS) on that diet in the UK. In the supermarkets here. It's meat, fish....bugger alll else. Unless you can cook. Course, if you come from 'elsewhere' you don't need to cook. You can wander in to Sainsburies and find...(drool) plastic covered counters of...(A SHRINE!) curries and vindalus and Madras...and..Omygod....I can't stand it!!! I heard tell in todays UK paper of 20 UK citizens in Dubai, who had ordered a curry from the UK, from their favourite curry house. It cost £2500, take away. Havla bogu I say, to these pioneers!!!! I have recently got in to pizzas...Specials! But, ALL the effin' supermarkets are now out of them, so, it's back to juha, roadkill (of several varieties) and walnut cakes of various recipes. Croatina food. Sorry guys, but, experience is not selling it to me. A few months ago (GROAN) we watched the 'Pope' or someone....down the quay in Sibenik, doing his thing...and, it was suggested I wait for the Army who had put on 'GRAH' for 2500 people. I waited. I ate. Army food. No wonder these Croats are formidable fighters!!!!! I will pay a FIVER for a tin of heinz beans. Promise!

I do not understand the Croatian snobbery regarding food. The food here is very poor, the reaosn why this is so is simple; in Croatia the stores are terrible, there is so little choice.
Croat's were all once told that English food is hideous so in typical communist fashion they believe that for the rest of their natural lifes.
"The man who never leaves home, believes that his mother's home cooking is the best in the world"
I have lived in 7 countries and Croatia has the worst supermarkets, the worst goods and the worst food.
But hey at least the roads are in good condition..ahem
At least the people are polite...hmmm
ok at least the people are open minded..ahahaha
Croatian's are complicated people; they thing they live in the most beautiful place on earth,,,,get out see the world this place is a dump..i can't wait until my contract expires....back to the first world.

Well,
I don't think you could have travelled very far, if your considered opinion is that Croatia is a dump !!
I have travelled a fair bit around the world to all continents, and even lived in the Swiss Alps for a couple of years ,... and IMHO, Croatia is the most beautiful place that I have seen.
Beautiful, not just because of it's fabulous scenery, but it's clean waters, it's genuinity, it's class, it has an air of something that you can't just put your finger on, but it something unique, something you just can't find anywhere else.
I don't want to offend any UK citizens, as I'm also speaking of living in urban Ireland and for that matter probably most of built up Europe, but if you want to swap Croatia for a life of 24/7 traffic jams, crappy weather, crime, pollution, a broken society (morally), with little or no true values on family life or friendship, then good luck to you, because you really have got 'issues'.
The country has just come out the other end of a war and a regime that will take years for themselves to get on their feet....but it is happening step by step. Roads are being built, investment is beginning, and in time your sacred supermarkets will appear with all your processed food you yearn for. It takes time to move from an oppressed state to a thriving economy, surely you can see that?
As for 'English Food', isn't ironic that the official national dish is ... Tikka Masala !! ... Doesn't that say it all?
What is your definition of 'open-minded'? Is it that people can marry as many times as they like, get divorced, bring in abortion, so the 'nuclear family' that once was is a thing of the past....because in the UK, it hasn't done much for society there has it... 1 in 2 marriages ending in divorce?
If you look down your nose at them for not being a 'first world' economy or lack of supermarkets, maybe it might explain your unhappiness, no-one likes a moaner.
I find the people polite, though not false like you would get in Disneyland.
You seem to have an unpleasant experience of Croatia, but I think you should really open your eyes, and maybe it's not so bad at all.

I totally value your personal opinions but when you speak, please, make sure its a dialogue, not a diahrrea. p.s. ive tried English food... they are ok but they are not even in the same league as Croatian food. I don't Get it !
What's there to hate?
Croatian farmers are not into chemicals, they're to expensive, so all the food is organic, well publicised. The choice of fresh fish and meat is excellent.
My summing up is, yes please leave Croatia and go west, then you can eat as many TV meals as you like.
I am a very fussy Englishman, but i cannot find fault with the supermarkts, Billa, Getro,Mercato,PLodine,Konzum and independents. If you cannot find what you need there, then i feel sorry for you!

No disrespect to Americian. But six year olds (35) get right on my tits. Craotia is okay...Man. What they need is a bit of George Bush....Am I right or what. The wise Buddha of the ....west. George Bush. That institution of incoherence that sprays its wisdom in bullets all across the world and ends up...disliked by...even Americans. Guest1 you ARE a credit to your nation. Sadly, it would appears...you 'are' your nation. I loved your entry. And I look forward to...(Pause in George Bush style, to read the prompt), to your next entry!

(if you are man enough to follow through with your bet). I just love the way you ASSUME that i know everything about everything and nothing about nothing... On the contrary, my friend. I know very little about everything and i know nothing about quantum mechanics... what i do know(little bit that i learned) is this: Croatia as a country is beautiful... its people, country, weather and yes, food. So far, i am paying less for my rent, utilities and food than i ever paid in the States... Job i have is something that i love to do, so i have no complaints there... ...Oh yeah, women here are beautiful... and beer is very cheap. So, only way im gonna leave and lose my 1000 euros to you is... if you kick me out of this country.( i want to see you try )

Am coming to stay in Croatia for a few months, what can´t I get there I might need? I like food, such as : English game, Indian curries anything Thai. Can you but spices there? fresh coriander ? chillies? Rabbit, hare or partridge? Back bacon? Will I starve?

I have never been able to find back bacon anywhere. Spices are OK to find. Bring curry and thai sauces with you.

Dear Folks,
I really don't understand the bitterness in this string of posts. Lets just acknowledge we all have different tastes. Accept this and move on. There is good and bad food and drink and prices everywhere.
I myself visited Croatia this summer and found the food to be delicious, the beer "Karlovacko" the best in the world to my liking, the bakery's very inexpensive and sinfully good and the shopping in the out-door market and Kunzum to be filled with fresh food and a good selection. Not to mention an experience!
I think the food in my cousin's home in Crikvenica is probably better than any resturant. I also stayed in Lovran at a Villa and their food was incredible.
I am half Irish and half Croatian and the food in both of those countries were by far the best I've tasted outside of the states. I can hardly wait to go back to visit both countries.
I know someone will pick apart something that I've said so go ahead.........................

All i can say is this: I love this country despite all the negatives (which EVERY country you live in WILL have) and i will try to promote it as much as i can. This doesnt mean that i will sugar coat everything so that you get a sour taste in your mouth when you get here... what i will tell will be my TRUE experience here in Croatia and i will be glad to share them with you.

I have seen all your messages about foods in Croatia. Well what can I say? I think I agree more with someone that it depends on the different tastes of different people. I myself is an Asian foreigner here in Zagreb. So whenever I cook stuffed paprika ( the paprika meatballs inside), I make it the Asian way meaning more spicy than usual. But some foods that I enjoy eating here must have a similar taste with my Asian foods. However, I must say that the only food that I hate eating is "beans" well that's only because we are not used to eat beans in my beautiful country.
Well for those foreigners who enjoy moaning and whinning about foods and life in Croatia. Come on guys! live your lives to the fullest. After all, life is too short. The meal that you have just eaten could be your last. Who knows. ;D hahaha.
Godspeed!

So, Guest 1, the wise and wonderful, what gives you the right to utter from the scared scripts that....anyone who disagrees with you should 'get the fuc out'? Or are you, an American, allowed this honour, outside of normal protocol and decency. As`are Amercians' in general, allowed to run jack-booted over what most people can see are rules unwritten, that don't need writing down...for most people. The 'food' trail I started, for a laugh, and it's been a laugh, and it's gone HOT, as are all my postings, until someone comes along and tells ME to get the fuc out. Because I have an opinion. Guest one. Your opinion is shallow. Sadly. I deeply regret honouring you with two replies. You will get no more. And yes, I AM English! And to end this bitter entry on a positive note, back to the 'food' theme. Spar are opening up in Croatia. So all is not lost. This 'may' not be in your dictionary.

I think that most of you must live with the poor people down south. Istrian food is very good, because partly I think it used to belong to Italy. Alsdoubles curry is easy to make, do you want a recipie?
