When I was a kid my grandmother came over from Croatia and she used to make a good Friday soup that consisted of a beef type broth with potato’s, carrots and green beans. Have you ever heard of a soup like this and if so do you have a recipe? My grandmother died when I was young but I can still remember the soup.

i don't think lots of people still stick to no meat on fridays rule.
frank, if i understand well, you're talking about vegetable soup without meat, just the beef broth. right? in that case, i don't think there's a unique recipe for that type of soups, i think everyone does it to their own taste. both my mum and my gran do it (well, gran used to) and both soups were a little different.
i think it's the basic vegetable soup recipe and you do it over and over, changing it until you 'catch' the taste you're used to.

Thanks I knew it was a long shot. This was a very thin broth that seemed to have some grease floating in it but I've never tasted anything this good in my life. I miss her and miss it. Thanks for the reply.

i know how you feel. there are dishes i'll never taste again because only my gran used to do them and only when she made them they tasted so good.
i think, even if your gran left the exact recipe and you managed to cook it exactly the same..... the taste still wouldn't be the same. SHE added the taste by cooking it. by being in your life.

i don't think lots of people still stick to no meat on fridays rule. I think most Croatians don't eat meat on fridays. Everybody in my family abstains from all animal products such as meat and dairy on both wednesdays and fridays. I think most other Croatians do so as well, possibly to a lesser extent.

my parents still don't eat meat on fridays even though i believe the vatican relaxed those rules in the 1970s.
I eat whatever i want whenever i want.

Frank,
As z00ey requested, I think it is important to know where your grandmother came from, which part of Croatia?
My Guess would be inland, Slavonia etc?
It sounds to me more like an Inland soup than a Coastline soup.
