Last night's UEFA Cup game between Birkirkara and Hajduk Split was interrupted when Croatian fans attacked Maltese police leaving 4 passers-by and 6 police officers in hospital. This is the 2nd tme that Croatian fans have rioted in Malta (the last time they destroyed a complete section of the Ta Qali and caused 1 officer to lose an eye) and there were a number of incidents before and after the game also.
200 Torcida attended and earlier in the day smashed up a bar owned by a local Serbian resident, his tearful Croatian wife stood pleading with them to stop as tables and other objects were hurled through the windows in St. Julians. 2 Croatian fans were arrested before the game for painting swastikas on one of the old walls of Valletta and currently the police have 29 in custody. The Croatian Consul was unavailable for comment.
