No one mentions Hull.
Hull has got to be on the very top of the list.

I simply dislike the whole of London, end of. It is unfriendly and crime-ridden and makes me even more nervous than I am naturally. Lewisham and Hither Green are the worst areas of all and on the few occasions I have had to be there I have almost had a panic attack on the street. Every day on the local news we hear about yet another stabbing, and a couple of months ago a group of chavs even threw a cat into the Thames! The gap between rich and poor is immense, and the snobbery of the mega-rich is unbearable. And the chavs make Northern chavs look like girl thingy cats. The Housemartins had the right idea when they called their first album London 0 Hull 4 ! So did Paul Heaton have a change of heart when he left The Housemartins and formed 'The Beautiful South'?! I lived around Lewisham for 7 years and have to agree it was the most awful place - I was actually living in Deptford, then Brockley and couldn't believe how expensive the property in those dirty, depressing and crime-ridden areas was when no-one in their right mind should actually want to live round there. I'm still amazed you left Croatia to go to Lewisham, the reverse journey was the best thing I've done! I do think London is a great city though and miss many, many things about it, just not living in that area!

Hull really is the arm pit of the North and has the great honour of being named as "The Worst Place to live in England" on several occassions by the BBC. Hull tops the lists or is there abouts for unemployment, drug abuse, poverty and teenage pregnancies. "Then we can also add a dash of stupidity, as most of the population of Hull seems to view education as something to be avoided – much like baths and showers." From worstcity.com On the bright side though, Hull City are in the Premier League this year. I am being a little unfair, they do have "The Deep Aquarium" which is fantastic. www.thedeep.co.uk/

I think they would hurt more without them in.
I'm the antipodean of Venus. I was dropped into kosovo during the war and frankly was not scared or worried in the slightest. I don't do nerves and I'm no wall flower.
However London at night is a scary place... you don't have to look for it.
I agree with Polako in this respect Croatia has a lot going for it, I suspect they're just delaying the inevitable, as whatever happens in the states we all follow at some point.
Enjoy it whilst you can.

I'm still amazed you left Croatia to go to Lewisham, the reverse journey was the best thing I've done! I do think London is a great city though and miss many, many things about it, just not living in that area! A misunderstanding - I don't live in Lewisham but in a poxy little town in Surrey full of Tories with only 1 bus an hour. I was visiting a friend in Lewisham. I only left Croatia because although I'm a Croatian citizen I didn't have health insurance (which I need being disabled), so my hubby got a job in England. What I actually wrote was that London chavs make Northern chavs look like p#u#s#s#y cats! People knock Hull too much, the west of the city and the Old Town are beautiful, and the whole place has soul. It wasn't the BBC that said it was the worst town, but two intensely annoying over-privileged toffs on Channel 4. The woman particularly does my head in - she is snotty-nosed, smug and sanctimonious and although she is only in her 30s she dresses like one's grandma. Enough said! ps - The name Beautiful South was another great example of Paul Heaton's lyrically wonderful sarcasm - in his book the South can't be beautiful!

Oxford is the most wonderful place in the UK, for me.
The most bizzare place I've ever visited in UK must be Strood, Kent. It felt completely empty, deserted, run down, desolate, eery...The effect was only magnified by an old USSR submarine moored there.

www.thedailymash.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1171&Itemid=59(sorry if already posted) btw, hull. i agree with all other posters... rough, dirty etc etc but it has "something" (i guess soul as others mentioned) which makes it alive and full of energy. always "like" going to hull, not because of its beautiful architecture or people ( ) but because it's not ashamed of what it is

Wow, this is much better than the Why We Hate the UK postings. Pocketvenus - surely you can't be slating the sainted Kirstie - daughter of Charles Henry Allsopp, 6th Baron Hindlip and former chairman of Christie's? She was named 91st sexiest woman by FHM Magazine in 2008! I live so far south I'm nearly in the sea (and sometimes I am), but I happily visit friends in such places as York and Leeds. I draw the line at Birmingham though...

Just because she's got a title and is la-di-dah does not give her the right to slate towns she knows nowt about and has probably never been to. Every town has good and bad parts, including her leafy London suburbs. I couldn't believe how young she is - she does dress like a rich old granny:)
