if you can afford to buy in Athens then you can afford Croatia!! (Slovenian coast is another story...no I don't want to live in a cupboard and pay 200000Euros!) Estate agents will say there are ways but to us they were just not above board and were risky ie my husband will not do anything unless its totally legal....(seems some of the Balkan genes got missed in his DNA!)....so every time they say "there are ways..." he turns off. He just listens to straight answers which are "Bosnians can not buy in Croatia nor Slovenia .There are no agreements as with Germany and UK" .. But enough of all that. All will change in its own good time.. And in any case if we could have bought there then we wouldn't be here in beautiful Greece...so good comes from bad! Our winters here are definitely more fun than Croatia. Better weather and even if it is cold there's still so much to do (course I mean in Athens and not on an island...) . And we're here struggling through tax declarations, resident permits, etc with next to no Greek knowledge (but yes the Greeks all speak wonderful English - unbelievable)...so I do sympathise with any Brits in Croatia who have to deal with balkan bureaucracy . But you know the sun doesn't come for free! and I say its worth the hassle .

I agree with you that its not right what Croatia is doing with the Brits - its totally disgusting. But not surprising to me. Remember Croatia also played its part in ethnic cleansing in the 90s. Znam. They are/were experts at getting ethnic minorities out of their properties!! Could you imagine if UK were to suddenly do the same to Croatians resident in UK??!! Perhaps UK should try it. My friend suggested that very thing to the British Embassy. Still nista though, strange that

Not just the 90s but also WII in collaboration with the Nazis. Do leopards change their spots?

I was in dubrovnik before the war with a friend when I was a teenager. The teen gang that we hung out with had serbs, bosnians, croats in it. We spoke in Serb-croat to the gang and at the time we were smoking and we all smoked the strongest Croatian fags which smelt like bonfires- stupid kids. I often wonder if some of the gang are still alive, particularly the guy from Sarajevo and the guy who lived in Kupari. One of the gang was a girl whose father was a famous lawyer in Dubrovnik. I have googled the name Niksic but nothing.

After a bit of thought jenrif, my comments were insensitive, I hope you accept my apology for that.
I often try to understand what I'll call "on the street" mentality about Yugoslavs but I remain confused. Those around me are mostly academics and all tell me they had no problem with anyone - except Tudjman. This led me to believe the whole thing was a political invention. Then I hear some unguarded comments by other locals, only a couple, but their views are extreme to say the least. So I'm still confused about how there was/is so much hatred.
Being so close to Slovenia, I can confirm that hundreds of Slovenes own properties here and in Medimurje county. I have not encountered Muslims other than seeing the muslim centre being constantly daubed with grafitti - which I'll assume is not complimentary.
About buying here. Sure, one of my reasons was to be able to afford a much better home than I could in the London area from where I come. Frankly though, I could have done just as well almost anywhere in France, maybe better. My point is, stability of the country had nothing to do with it. I was, admittedly, quite naive about the level of official banditry I would have to face here in HR. You live and learn huh?

I have a question that I would like to ask and would be grateful if someone would be able to answer it. Feb 2009 - does anyone know if MOJ are still processing ownership application between now & Feb? Or are they just killing time & all the applications are still sitting there? Would be good to find out. We know someone who is about to submit his application but is wondering if he should wait.

as far as i know they are still processing them. What i have not been able to get yet is someone who will say "def. yes 100% " that pre-2009 purchases can be delivered to the land registry and that the clerks will accept them on 01.02.09. Anyone had more joy than me with this?
