Does anyone know if a Croatian national will need an Internationl Driving Licence/Permit to drive a hire car (hired in the UK) in the UK for a week or so or would just an HR licence be OK?

Martin, whether they are officially accepted or not by the authorities, I'd suggest you or whoever it is contact the rental company beforehand, as it is not impossible that the office where you actually turn up will not know - and it would as a minimum save time if you clarified it beforehand. FWIW, I have used a company called Wideres in the UK several times - I found they give excellent value. I last used them in 2006 I think - I expect they are still around. If you can't find them I will search out their email. It's on my old system though. kesterj

yes - obviously they have expanded since I last used them - the website is much more fancy than it used to be. I used them first in 1999 after checking a few prices - TBH I don't even check anyone else these days. If you can find anyone offering better value, please let me know. You actually get told to go to a "brand name" desk like Europacar - and you get the same car at about 35% discount IIRC. I guess they make block bookings with the branded company. I have used them at LHR, LUT, STN ..........BUT, beware LHR these days - they charge for the d**ned hotel buses (where the rentacar desk may be.) kesterj
