I have some friends with a property on Ciovo which they are thinking of renting out. Can anybody tell me the cost of a rental licence and where you apply for one? I have a feeling somebody's going to tell me it's not a simple process!

It can be a simple process To organise it themselves they will need to be in Ciovo for a couple of weeks but the costs are low (less than 1000 kuna) and the paperwork is not difficult. If your friends are not in Croatia, there is an English woman in Ciovo/Trogir who can take care of it all for them. Not as cheap but definitely simpler !!

Are non-Croats allowed to rent out properties ? Yes. providing that they have formed a Croatian company to do so. And providing that the property to be rented out has a catagorisation listing, ie a rental licence. The property must be in a commercial or tourist zone to get the catagorisation. They, under current law, will NOT get the permission if the property is a residential property.

Would I have to pay local Croatian and UK tax; how does that work?

Yes you can rent long term. But not short term tourist rent You will need up to date clean ownership papers. You can buy a standard contract in Narive novine. Both parties fill out in Croatian and then you go to public notary You will need an O.I.B number.

Croatian spelling is not my strongpoint
There is one of the shops that i am on about in most major cities and i am sure Split will have one. They sell ..stationary, office supplies, school bags, books,tables, maps a few toys, and they have a big pile of ready made contracts . The name of the contract for long term rental is UGOVOR O NAJMU (sa slobodno ugovorenom najamninon)

My friends are in Ciovo for a few days from tomorrow. Do you have the details of the English lady in Ciovo/Trogir please? If not, does anybody know of somebody who could help them with the process of obtaining a rental licence?Preferrably English speaking. They don't have much of a clue where to begin.

If the property in croatia was built before 1968 and you have clean ownership stating that it was ,then the laws are different again . If built before 1968 then as a foreign owned Croatian Company or Croatian owned Company you can apply for and get the required catagorisation.
