I have to back up the story - this young man (28 now) has never had a licence to drive - has been in lots of car accidents - has so many tickets from "driving without licence" speeding beyond the limit" crashed one motorbike (three of his friends have been killed this year on motor bikes not to mention on the previous years ) He has now bought a "super power" motor" bike with no "MOT" (as in UK) no insurance and no licence to even use the bike He has a lot of "younger and same age" I talked to him about this and he said he had friends who think the same way do not buy insurance and do not register the car and if they have to they register it under the name of the father, grandfather etc - otherwise they would have to pay too much - one of my friend's son told me that he took the plates from his grandfather's car - put them on his and he was OK !! He was actually laughing when he said this to me as he said in the end "if I have an accident my grandfather will be blamed and not prosecuted" What is everyone' s theory on this

Unless you steal them, you can't get number plates here without an MOT (Tehnicki pregled), insurance and paying your road tax. You have to get all three at the same place so you have all of them - or you steal some number plates and have none of them. ... unless you are Roma, nobody expects them to have anything. Yes I remember that laborious process but Yugos are not new cars they'll have been on the road a long time ergo they have been registered and have plates. Whether they're insured is another issue... I believe the law in Croatia is that you can only drive on a uk licence for 3 months? I never drove on anything else and was pulled up many times. In fact in England I've been pulled up twice in 14 years of driving in Croatia more than 10 times. Not once did I get an official ticket, it was 50-50 between bribes and being let off because they didn't know what to do/or speak English. Slovenia on the other hand they drive you to the next cash point for 90 euros. The thingys.
