GB / U.K. is definitively NOT Croatia's enemy ( at this time ! ) ; for any number of significant reasons ... ( inter alia ) as an ex-world Power , the Brits have much more time and interest for places , all over , like DownUnda , NZ , Canada , Argentina , SethEffrika , Middle East , Iberian penninsula even , Cyprus , Malta ...hey , this could be a long-ish list , indeed ! On the positive side , I think the ( what v. little of ) what U.K. media reported and commented on the ICTY/Hague court ruling of last week ( generals , again ) was about the fairest and most honest coverage , of all the major EU-media , in recognising the "Deal" , the so-called "justice" , the circumstances , the cards being played , at the moment...; the French and the Dutch were only just over-simplyfingly gloating that that the Croats were ruled to be just as bad boys , as the Serbs are known to have been... and the Krauts ( supposedly : our best mates ? Since the days of Tajci & Danke , Deutschland ! ) had nothing to say at all , but sharply reported the sentences in briefest and non-commentarial ways ; but then , the Germans , being the biggest gainers and profiteers from all the EU-arrangements have other interests at heart ! Ask the Magyars , the Estonians , the Latvians and so many others , on the "periphery" of the same , corrupt and twisted EU , that same one EU , which HR are so stupidly killing themselves and bending-over-backwards , to be admitted into ...
In fact , the opposite prevails : you could almost say that the ordinary Brits are amongst the biggest symphatisers of Croatia , still remembering Davor Shuker's 90's footie squad , Kathrina & the Waves' win , the odd good week by the Adriatic , cheap Zhuja ...

I would fully endorse this. Most of my friends are football fans and there is an almost universal admiration for Croatian football and its supporters. They are deemed to be amongst the very few who come to Wembley and actually make any real noise and thier passion is something that is held in high esteem. Even abroad they stand out as being one of the few nations that England supporters encounter with whom they have a respect for given the numbers that travel and the level of support they give. Its all thumbs up on that score. Also the over-whelming majority of Brits who go to Croatia on holiday come back with a very positive image of both the country and the people. Friendly people, beautiful women and generally a laid back and civilised atmosphere all at what we consider reasonable prices. Its just that in political terms Croatia and what happens to it does not feature on the radar for well over 90% of the population. I would say that for the remaining 10% the jury is definitely out on Croatia politically because there are lingering doubts about the whole notion of Croatian independence anyway due to the Ustache regime of WW2 along with the way in which the HVO especially turned on thier Bosnian Muslim allies during the war. Throw in the general corruption as well and you have a country that in political terms does not have many admirers over here. But, and be honest here, do you honestly expect anything else ? But in no way, shape or form are Croatia considered an enemy. Its just not that important to us.

With new articles like as follows it's no wonder some Croatians might think the UK government is their enemy: www.croatiantimes.com/news/General_News/2011-04-19/18684/British_politician_welcomes_Gotovina%2C_Markac_verdictOne point though is that the common person doesn’t always see or understand the big picture, what really went on and who over stepped the mark. I'm sure there are politics involved (maybe even some from the Croatia side), a bargaining chip, but then there is also the rule of law. Probably if he was to return to Croatia today he could run for prime minister.

With new articles like as follows it's no wonder some Croatians might think the UK government is their enemy: he,he...I knew they would do something like this, the pattern is the Croatia media wait for some british view on something and then they do the old "twist and exaggerate" its a great way to deflect some bad news and give people something to hate I am sure other countrys's people have far worse views if they trawl press releases, but no, portray the brits as the enemy and sway opinions to boot!! They just wont forgive us for david steel and sir mike Jackson in the Yugoslav war...

As a Brit, I am at war with my competition, the tax collector, the local Mup office, anti-foreigner sentiments, Carina down at the central post office, Zagreb Mafia Parking, red tape and a host of other things here in Croatia. It's no wonder Croatians feel intimidated and think we Brits are their enemies. I always liked what John Paul Jones said: "I have not yet begun to fight"! en.wikiquote.org/wiki/John_Paul_Jones

I think the question could be reversed. Check out the following item: krapanj.com/1254/croatia-foreigners-unwelcome Here is an extract: As we have often said in this blog, buying houses in Croatia has been simplified considerably in the last few years and many of our clients have benefited. We expect even more interest after Croatia joins the EU next year. However, investing in Croatia might still have to come with a small health warning, it seems. Not all regions of the country appear to be as welcoming as others. Sibenik region seems to be having major problems.

Tell this man to take it to the media? Does he really have a letter from the mayor and officials? If so, then he can also sue his neighbour. Make a scandle. Just make sure you onw your property. But from the picture of the son he posted on his site, seems they hold some clout on the Island. Maybe you local mafia? He can also contact the British embassy.
I guess it all goes within the building code in that area, if others are doing it then make a stink.
But get media involved, show them the pictures and point out the neighbours who complained. Say that as a forigner they are dicriminating against you. They sound like neighbours from hell.
Maybe the neighbour from hell is trying to get the Brit. to move so he can buy the house for cheap?

Having read this guys blog you have to wonder where he went wrong? Sounds to me like he did everything the correct "Croatian" way in getting the top local officials to sign off on his canopy.
However assuming there are various local planning restrictions maybe a complete proper planning application should have been sought, although that does sound a bit excessive just for a canopy over his doorway and that there are apparently several other similar canopies nearby.
I lived in a small rural village in the UK once and had similar problems with locals who resented us "rich-townies" moving in and buying up the properties, maybe its the same situation here.
In line with this particular thread, I have wonder if it would be the same scenario had they been German, Italian etc. I think yes. Petty minded individuals like this hate everybody who's not a native.

This is news to me,as a Brit.Tbh most Brits don't really know of this situation.By most I mean 99.9% of the UK's sentient population. This is just a case of a lippy dwarf mouthing off to a giant when the giants back is turned and he is out of earshot.Maybe this is a cultural thing,a form of philosophy practiced in the Balkans. It is not high class to talk this way behind a peoples back, and in this regard, about a supposed serious issue of which they know nothing of ?I could not hazard a guess as to why this lone commentator wants to drag an unawares island people under the umbrella of his inferiority complex? The owner of one big mouth can make a nation look bad.I am glad his opinions did not carry as far as his halitosis.I am also again glad that he is not the instigator of some form of poisoned cultural relations between our respective cultures.

Unfortunately, this sort of thinking still exist, however the argument has meta-morphed itself into an anti EU argument (of course with Britain as the oppressor)
When I first came to this country a few yrs ago I remember someone saying to me how the British hate Croatians and love only serbs (because of WW1 etc), last year a anti EU stall was setup in the main square, I asked the 2 guys why they are against the EU, they told me that they refuse to speak english in their country, I asked my croatia friend to ask them, They said they refuse to explain their action to English people because we are and have always been Croatian opressors! Only recently a Younger person said the same thing to me , but more of how we are always wanting to put down croatia and destroy its independence.
So no matter what...I dont think this will change in the near future, most Croats wont check facts (even though the internet is here) and prefer to listen to and believe every word that is told to them by some so-called (bought or Photoshopped their qualification) expert
Like I read on a earlier reply to this post...how many Croats know of Britains 19 Century negotiations with Serbia to halt russian expansion? Russia came to serbia's defence in WW1, Britain came to the defence of France and Belgium, which were allies of Russia WW2 wasnt croatia made a Nazi puppet state and the Serbian happen to be on the same side as the Brits UN missions and red tape that failed in the Yugoslav wars were the fault of UN bureaucracy and not British (srebrenice = dutch were in charge...but they dont get the same stick) British making the Cro. Government stick to its agreements and making it commit to the same policies as other members do not make them pick on you...I think Slovenians were more petty! British pointing out government failings is not them ridiculing croats, the same is when they report a crime
Its definitely time for some of the reports to get more up to date and some of their readers to not believe all they hear and move away from the sheep mentality.

There is an internet slang meme "haters gonna hate" and it says it all really. These scum just need an excuse to hate, if it wasnt english, it'd be american, italians gays, jewish, etc. best thing is to just ignore them and get on with your own life.

I love Croatians, especually when they agree with me on everything, pay on time, offer me free beer, food and snacks, tell me how good I speak Croatian (cough cough) and even English (what did you say), how much they adore my children, love what I got to offer and give me a real easy time. The key is to stay humble, tell them your so happy to leave the UK or where ever and come to Croatia, how much you admire their sport teams and enjoy drinking local brew.
