has anyone ever heard this quote before? I think its quite good. I read it in an article that calls Croatia the croissant, which I also had never heard before and I thought was quite good. The rest of the article wasn't quite so amusing though. It describes Croatia's corruption which has been discussed (and even denied) on these boards for many years. All in all I thought it was a good article:- www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,799176,00.html

All in all I thought it was a good article:- www.spiegel.de/international/europe/0,1518,799176,00.html Carol , a Croissant is a delicacy pastry which some ( predominantly : Francophones ) enjoy for breakfast ; crisply baked "lisnato tijesto" - or is it : "tjesto" ? - , sweet-ish and laden with butter , the nothern French and the Belgians also like it almond-crusted or spinkled with chocolate bits ; it is a quick pick-up in the morning but nowhere as good as banana ( the energy does not last long and can be quite fattening - Kylie Minogue is said to be enamoured with them , though ) ; have never seen any worth the name in Zagreb/Samobor and thereabouts . You may found some 4th rate , much too heavy , poor and disappointing versions of this item at your local Waitrose or even M & S . On the EU-issues : has anyone seen today's press releases , incl. piccies of Merkel , Sarko and Monti ( the new Capo of Italia ) , all smiling like the EU-tomorrows have no problems left to resolve now ? Yeah , for the older ones amongst us : unsettlingly reminiscent , 70 yrs back ,of World War II. , when Fuehrer's Deutschland Ueber Alles , French ( Clichy regime ) Marechal Petain's sellouts and Il Duce Mussolini all were joined as The Powers of Axis ? ( Assisted by a few others , the usual quislings and ne'er do goods , in various parts of European continent . )

Maybe I'm reading this wrong, but Ray, are you thinking that Carol doesn't know what a croissant is ?
I agree there is no good croissant in Zagreb, and I, like the belgy's, also love the almond ones.

Honestly , I couldn't be sure , whether Carol knew , or didn't ! ( one comes accross any number of Brits , in Bruxelles and elsewhere , who are not quite sure what a croissant might be ) - one of my favourite Sunday treats , when I get lucky to be in the correct geographical locations , i.e. ( funny enough , in Dubai they are excellent , too , if you know , where to go ! ) Then again : I have family and friends in HR who would not know a croissant from a bouffant or a bon-vivant , at least they recognise the word for a deodorant ... yet , all and everyone acting ever so smug , know-it-all , wiser than thou ...; in closing : to my reckoning , there is not much interest in anything Francophone in Croatia ( excepting some artists , poets , musicians , sportspeople , maybe ? ) ; rather , for them , ordinary , common-or-garden-variety folks there : it's Germany at the centre of Universe , then maybe the U.S. , followed by Austria , Italy and BiH...not many others I can think of !

Even in Croatia, everyone knows what is a croissant, albeit they all pronounce it wrong. They also don't know how it should really taste, because all bakeries only know how to create a sorry excuse for a real croissant. .
