Sounds scary to go give their money to a rich Croat. For some reason they seem to get richer and the buyer gets screwed. Hope they haven't fallen for the pity sale.

I heard they were going to avoid all the hassles normal folks have developing, simply by buying the whole country ;D

I know this area very well, where they are reported to be interested in. Each year for at least the last 7 years somebody new supposedly are interested in it. Over the years the price has varied for the Barbariga projects from 10 million to todays 85 million.
The plans look fantastic and every now and then they are published in the newspaper Glas Istra and there is some run of the mill, over hyped , inflated story that goes with it,usually with very little facts. like several other stories that get churned out when they cant be bothered to do any real reporting, ( golf course Liznjan, golf course Porec, , new marina Pula, new marina Liznjan etc ) all of which have never happened. Although we did get 10 new roundabouts last year..
This just sounds another one of those stories. The area will remain a campsite and a quiet pebble beach until the next celebrity visits anywhere within 100 km of it and therefore is interested in buying it.

UTV
What is the biggest project that has actually happened up in Istria (am assuming something bigger than 10 roundabouts...). So many plans, so much hot air. What has gone up?
And a second question, does anyone know of an example of tourist-commercial buildling land (the old Zone D) that was turned into a finished project?

Probally could with all the debt it has, and get it for a bargain price. I think what has happened was it was brought up in some chit chat and maybe Brad said (like we all do at times about dream property) "it would be nice to get some property in such a lovely place". I'm sure he didn't go sign something or put a deposite down, but then again who knows. Like the government said, if your willing to put down 10 million then they will give you a personal official to help get you through the mine field (maybe this is what Joline was actually talking about... property purchase and not land mines?) of red tape. AT least these two people do get out and do things for humanity, more then I can say for most people in government.

I know exactly what you are saying Totalcroatia! My list of hot-air projects would include the new Trogir - Ciovo bridge and the Peljesacs Bridge ( along with various golf courses, mega marina and 5 star tourist resorts). As you say, its much harder to name projects that ever actually happened.

Would the Le Meridien Lav in Podstrana count as an example of tourist-commercial buildling land that was turned into a finished project?

Would the Le Meridien Lav in Podstrana count as an example of tourist-commercial buildling land that was turned into a finished project? Even the Super Nova shopping Mall (towards airport) in Zagreb has been a start stop event. Last time past there nothing was happening. The only ones who seem to be building are City Centre One owners. Their new second Zagreb mall is about done, with plan to open later this year. Another building that is going up in next to Bundek Park. No idea what it is going to be. Looks almost finished. Not a bad location. Still no super water park anywhere (a few small ones way out of town), but that would be a great investment. Not sure why no one has bothered to build one in Zagreb. With 1 million people it would sure to be a hit (If I only had the money or investment). We now have about 3 to 4 bowling places which seem to be pretty busy (have gone to a few). Movie theatres seem to be doing ok, but other then that no other grand entertainment venues (sorry, I don't equate going to a shopping mall as entertaining). We still only have one golf course in Zagreb, and it's pretty bland structure wise.

And a second question, does anyone know of an example of tourist-commercial buildling land (the old Zone D) that was turned into a finished project? There has been a couple of big hotels built. 1 in Umag ( poor sewage, bad access roads ) and 1 in Rovinj , i haven't been there yet as its way out of my price range at 150 euro per night, but i have heard its nice. apart from that i am really am struggling, i have been racking my brains for 2 hours and thats all i have come up with. There is a new Y road ( posh Dual carriageway ) that goes through Istria and we have the pleasure of paying 30 - 40 kuna to use it. Last spring the council around Pula, Medulin, Premantura, Pomer and Fazana went mad on roundabouts. For ever Pula had 1 roundabout, and then last year they removed the traffic lights and placed roundabouts ( not nice ones, but ones surrounded by orange and white striped cones ) since last year they have replaced about 5 of the coned roundabout with nice ones, = cobble stones a few plants, a few rocks and olive tree in the middle. In total there about 20 roundabouts in the above areas. Over the last few years there have been a few mini investments, such as building a complex of Istrian houses. Most have failed as the design was terrible and the building quality abysmal. There are a few that have succeeded, but not many. When they build a complex of 10 - 20 houses, all square, all with no character, all featureless, with poor building standards and yet try and charge over 2,000 m2 its easy to see why they are not sold and the investor either runs away, goes bankrupt, or end up in prison. Then of course you have the company that invested 12 mil euro into building 67 istrian stone villas. When 30 were complete, the law changed about getting the license to rent, work stopped, the company went bust. Result 67 houses abandoned, cant be sold, cant be bought, cant be rented. The list of * plans * is endless. The list of completions you can write on the back of a stamp conclusion ... Never belive the hype

Never belive the hypeYea, they have this community some foreign investor built in Samobor and it's all but empty. Not a bad place and ok build, but just no market. Quite sad to say the least! A friend of ours who has an English kindergarten in Zagreb said they got an offer to open another kindergarten out on this housing zone but after checking it out saw no market. There was also the big plan to open a water park in Samobor, but again never got built. Besides, just 5 minutes down the road is Slovenia’s biggest indoor and outdoor water park, so don’t understand the logic (seeing shortly no more borders).

waterparks, that reminds me a water park was planned for Vodnjan ( 7km from Pula ) one of the things the company that were investing had to do first was to get a telephone number. They got the number............................ 5 years ago.... as of 23.02.12 . Waterparks in Vodnjan = 0 Holes dug for water parks in Vodnjan= 0 Infrastructure of Vodnjan waterpark = 0 There was an advert for it about 4 years ago, saying opening soon. !!!!
