I thought this "cute", but again it kind of makes me wonder how starved the Croat news media are for attention? 1 owner is Italian and the other is a Croatian-American living in London. I say good on them for their efforts, but sadly it is not a Croatian cake shop, as not one item on the menu is of Croatian origin. Check out the breakfast picture on their site of a soft boiled egg with little bread soldiers dipped in it. Odd as it might be, most of the success stories in the news seem to be about Croats from abroad, living abroad, be they half, quarter or less. But in all fairness, Vinsec could take a leaf out of their presentation, the hominess of their establishment. www.croatiantimes.com/news/Business/2012-10-19/30341/Croat_owned_coffee_shop_best_in_London

For some reason, these kinds of stories really annoy me. You can't call that cafe Croat owned, when the article says it's owned by an Italian and an American(of Croat heritage) living in England.
I was born and Raised in Australia by Scottish/English parents.
If I had a good cafe in Zagreb, people would say, 'that Australian cafe', not 'that Scottish/English cafe'

Talk about clutching at straws for news stories. Nothing story. As far as I am concerned he is an American living in the UK who has some Croat heritage and who is a part-owner. Hardly "Croat Owned" and hardly news worthy. @gmh, your lucky people would say "that Australian cafe" than the other option:)

A bit of a limp connection to say the least. Most likely that these guys sent the story in to get some marketing exposure, so good on them.
So lets do our own competition. Where is the best "cake and coffee" shop here in your opinion?
My vote goes to the one in Varazdin Toplice. Great coffee and excellent cakes that look good and actually have some taste. Nice ice cream also. Bad parking though.

Actually, talking about Aussie Land, they do love their "cafe", and very common for people to go out on a Thursday or weekend for a cup and cake. The only difference is the coffee cup is about 5 times bigger then what you get in HR and very milky and HOT. Sorry, that's my one beef with Croatian coffee, always served warm, not HOT. But they are also big on cakes over there. So, if an Aussie was to setup a cake shop in HR, it's wouldn't be to bad if modeled after an Aussie one. It would then be that "Croat-Aussie cafe", emphasis on "Croat"!
Talking about another Aussie tradition food.. meat pies. Someone actually tried to market them them in HR some years back but it just didn't catch on. The same with wheatabix (British-Aussie breakfast cereal). This can be found in stores, but very pricy.

Were they 4 'n 20 pies? Hard to knock the Burek off its purchase in Croatia. But you can't beat a good meat pie. My gripe about coffee shops in Croatia is you cant get anything to eat at any of them. No decent breakfast - coffee places.. and the coffee is too small and cold. In Australia you get a decent cup size. Madgolfer..I am with you on Varazdin, but for me there is a little cafe in Varazdin town, not sure of the name, that is a notch above anything I been to in Croatia.

I don't particularly like Croatian cakes. Well I've never had one that beats cakes from home. Everyone asks me what I miss most about Australia. And I always answer: Pies, Pasties, Sausage rolls, Fish & Chips, Chinese (food), Vanilla Slices, and Prawns. When driving down the Coast, we always stop at "Marche" Roadhouse/pitstop. They have good coffee and an amazing spread (buffet style) of food. P.S Best Aussie pies are Gillies from Victoria

P.S Best Aussie pies are Gillies from Victoria As someone born in UK and raised a bit in Aussie I can give a BIG amen to Aussie Pies and cakes. I don't know what it is, but Aussie pies are so much better then say UK ones (not really has a "pie" in HR), as are most of the cakes. I think the reason Aussie cakes taste so good is because there are so many types and a lot of outside influence (no doubt due to the makeup of the population). For example, if you go to a Croatian cake shop (yes, even Vincek), most of the styles or tastes are pretty much standard and similar. No doubt home cooking takes the cake, and I have tasted many a home baked Croatian cake and been over the moon, but Aussie ones have something special, as do the Pies. I love the way they have so many different styles of pies. And for some reason you sit there and enjoy the thing (the one thing I think Vincek seriously need to look into, say expand their location so it's not like a cattle ranch, people standing around waiting for a table with cake, coffee and ice cream in hand).
